Philippoussis pulls out of play-off

Tennis Australia

Mark Philippoussis has withdrawn from the Australian Open play-off and will immediately undergo surgery for a tear in the cartilage of his right knee.

Philippoussis said he had been feeling a bit of pain in his knee during his training in Australia in the lead-up to the event, and damaged it further in his win over Brydan Klein on Saturday night.

"I am bitterly disappointed because I really wanted to play in Australia this summer," Philippoussis said this afternoon.

"They tell me it can be fixed. My initial reaction is I want to get the surgery done and then work on getting back on the court as soon as I can."

Australian Open 2007 junior champion Brydan Klein will replace Philippoussis as a lucky loser in the play-off. He will take on Victorian Rameez Junaid in the fourth match on Court 7 tomorrow.

The women’s draw has been updated too, with Victorian teenager Sally Peers withdrawing from the play-off with a torn stomach muscle. She will be replaced by Canberra’s Alison Bai.

Play will commence at 11.00 am tomorrow at Melbourne Park and entry is free to the public.

Scud's career in the balance

The tennis career of two-time Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis is all but over after he was forced to pull out of not only the Australian Open wildcard play-off but the entire summer on Tuesday due to a relapse of the knee injury that sidelined him for most of 2007.

The 31-year-old will immediately undergo surgery for a tear in the cartilage of his right knee, the same knee that collapsed during last January's Hopman Cup.

Philippoussis had only played a handful of matches on the senior tour since that injury, prior to the Australian Open wildcard play-off in which he only lasted two matches before again succumbing to another knee injury.

The latest injury confirms suspicions the 31-year-old - who stands 195cm and weighs 102kg - is no longer physically equipped to cope with the demands of the professional tennis circuit.

Philippoussis confirmed on Tuesday he had been feeling pain in his knee during training in the lead-up to the play-off - which the big-serving Victorian did not want to contest but was forced to because it was the only way he was going to win a place in this year's Australian Open field due to his low ranking following his long lay-off.

The 1998 US Open and 2003 Wimbledon runner-up then damaged his knee further during his first-up win over teenager Brydan Klein during the wildcard play-off at Melbourne Park.

"I am bitterly disappointed because I really wanted to play in Australia this summer," Philippoussis said of his latest setback.

However he refused to concede his career - which has also included 11 tournament wins as well as two Davis Cup triumphs - was over.

"They tell me it can be fixed," he said.

"My initial reaction is I want to get the surgery done and then work on getting back on the court as soon as I can."

Much has been said about Marks dedication and discipline, however I must give him plenty of credit for being so optimistic about ANOTHER comeback. Fingers crossed he'll be back within 12 months, lol I'm joking, I just thought a light hearted joke may be appropriate. Well I guess Mark can have a nice time with his family now without too many distractions this xmas. I wonder if Mark will do more media work for channel 7 during the OZ Open, it would be nice too see.

Craig Tiley was just interviewed on channel 10. He said that Mark won't make a decision about his career until after surgery and he has been through some rehabilitation time.

How many times can Mark come back mentally from these devestating blows, regardless of how he can keep coming back physcially. His mental strength is amazing but do we really want Mark to put himself through what could be false hope once again?

For whatever Mark needs to make things better ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I wouldn't be surprised if Marks decision on his future will be based on what others recommend too him. I think He'll give it 1 more go, provided that the rehab goes well. He won Newport, seemingly out of nowhere, when he stayed fit for a few months he had good succes, so hopefully if he believes he can stay in good shape for a decent amount of time then hopefully more success will not be too far away for him.

This is such a huge blow. All the hype has gone. I just dont get it. The media portrayed the injury as minor. Will he see off the whole Australian Summer.

I think it will be important for Mark to take as much advise possible. Right now I am just worried about his health in the future. He's only 31 and has a lot of living to do. He's always been an active person - loves surfing and adrenaline activities.. and he also want's to be a family man.. all these injuries and surgeries to his knees can't mean the best quality of health later on.

Tennis would have to be one of the meanest and most demanding physical sports, personally I hope we don't see him back until he builds up those legs and loses all the bulk in his chest and waist. In his early 20's Mark was very lean, with the right diet and training he can change his body shape. But it will be a matter of time and involve complete dedication and hard work

LOTS OF PLAYERS AND GOOD LUCK VIBES FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY!!

You couldn't have said it better Jill.

On Sky News they just said that Mark is expected too annouce his retirement. I don't mean too sound negative, but everytime I've heard Sky News say things like that, they're usually right. Fingers crossed thats not the case.
