Australian Open - Nintendo Wii appearance (Jan 27) - news / Pics / interviews
Mark will be re-appearing at the Nintendo Wii Stand, Sunday 27th January for the championship play-off.
Philippoussis could be quitting
15th January 2008, 10:30 WST
Mark Philippoussis today gave the strongest hint that his tennis career could be over.
The former Wimbledon and US Open finalist has made no decision about playing again following yet another debilitating injury.
The 31-year-old is recovering from his fifth knee operation after injuring his right leg during the Australian Open wildcard play-off last month and was philosophical about a possible return to the tennis tour today.
“If it’s something I feel like, in a few months when I’m healthy and I want to get on the court and start hitting and the hunger’s there ... maybe,” he said.
“To be honest, when I do get myself strong and if I feel like I want to get back on the court and hit balls, fine and if I feel like the hunger’s still there it could be a different story.
“But I’m not thinking about that at all. I just want to work on my rehab and just getting off the crutches.
“I’m still watching the game. I sat in front of the TV yesterday and watched all the matches so that’s a good sign.
“I won’t lie - but at the moment I’m just enjoying spending time with my family and friends.”
In recent months the Victorian has been seen more on the small screen than on the centre court.
With his tennis schedule in a state of perpetual flux, Philippoussis starred in the American dating reality show The Age of Love.
And there is speculation that once his injury is healed he may join the Channel 7 series Dancing With The Stars.
Philippoussis did not play at ATP match last year but contested a seniors’ events.
Were he to return to the court this year he would come back with an injury-protected ranking of 112 - which could last two years or longer.
But he has no thoughts at the moment of even a tentative schedule.
“Not at all, no,” he said.
“At the moment Im just trying to get healthy and stay healthy.
“I want to do a lot of work in the swimming pool and a lot of work in the gym when it is right to get myself healthy and strong.
“The knee is going along good. The good thing is from the surgery, the knee wasn’t as bad as originally thought and I’ll be on crutches for two months and it’ll be fine then.”

Re: AO - Nintendo appearance - Mark news / Pics / interviews
Hi guys,
Mark was wonderful today - brilliant with all the fans despite the crutches and the very painful looking knee. He was smiling and laughing (i caught him saying something like "im much more consistent in this game [wii] than i am in real tennis" to one of the little kids that was there.
took a bunch of photos which i have emailed to jill - putting them up here myself is a bit too high tech for my capabilities but im sure she'll put up the best ones when she gets a chance.
will have to give a full account later - been a bit sick this afternoon....

It sounds fantastic Christina, what a great day
You could have email pics to me as I'm on holidays and would have been happy to put them up on The Scud Zone for you.

Re: Australian Open - Nintendo appearance - Mark news / Pics / interviews
Hey guys,
sorry for it taking me so long to post this but i have finally managed to get back online to report the wii championships
Jill and I got there at around 10ish i think, and I immediately asked them if Mark was still going to be there (they had said the previous day that they weren't sure.. and they still had no signs or anything to say he was coming). they tried to do the "uhhh not sure" rubbish on me again until i put my foot down and *may* have yelled at them a bit . i said something along the lines of "thats bull, its on your website, and I'm not leaving here until i see him so don't even try to get rid of me"
after that they actually got a bit more friendly and confirmed that he would indeed be there at 11. they kept it pretty quiet until about 10:45 when they started shouting it to the entire world that mark was going to be there at 11, which annoyed me because we had been there all morning and they weren't even gonna tell us (the TRUE fans) that he was definitely coming.
at about 5 past 11 we were both getting pretty nervous - you'd think we'd be used to seeing him by now! he turned up on crutches and there were HEAPS of TV crews and photographers there and we couldn't really see much (despite choosing the best place to stand in the hour before he came). Eventually we decided to just walk into the tent to take some photos - this worked for Jill but I got sent back out after taking just one photo - was NOT happy. So after all the interviews i decided to try again - walked back in and this time they let me stay . thats when i took all the photos that val has kindly put up for everyone to see. this is when he was playing wii with some of the other people there - he was really sweet to all the kids and making jokes like "im much more consistent in this game than real tennis". by this stage the stupid camera people had made him move 3 times to get better light - which i thought was TOTALLY RIDICULOUS considering the knee and the crutches but he did it with a smile. then they said that anyone who wanted an autograph or photo was to start lining up and we wasted no time in jumping to the front to get ours
this is when i said to him "all the best from the scud zone, whatever you decide to do". I wanted to say something without having to make him talk about the possibility of retirement and i think he appreciated that - he had a second look at me (maybe he got a bit freaked out and remembered that year at Kooyong ) and said "thanks very much".
he stayed until every single person in the line had their photos and autographs (this went for about an hour) and then he started to get ready to leave. we followed (at a non-stalkerish distance, ) and watched a few other younger girls trying to get the courage to ask for a photo - when they finally did, he was totally fine with it! i was amazed considering he was on his crutches, but he somehow managed to sign a few more autographs while on them and pose for some more photos. the kids reminded me of how pathetic I was the first time i met him, hehe.
all in all, a great experience. for me, it was a chance to say goodbye, as its pretty unlikely ill ever see him in person again. I hope that you guys aren't too jealous we got to experience this and that my photos and report have been enjoyable for you all.

Re: Australian Open - Nintendo Wii appearance - news / Pics / interviews
Fabulous report! Thanks Christina and thanks for sharing your pics
I'm green too but I'm also very happy that you and Jill got to see Mark for what could possibly be a final opportunity.
I feel so lucky to have spent so much time in 2002, 2003, 2004 at Koyoong and Melbourne Park (for Davis Cup and Australian Open) and saw so much of Mark live and a few opportunites to say hello.
Those were the best times, especially sharing them with yourself (and your mum!), Marcia, Lorraine, Tina, Adana, David, Palm and Aey Of course, I saw Mark at Melbourne Park after 2004 but those events weren't as pleasurable.
