returning?....
Ok so this was in a paper today...
Edition 1 - FIRSTFRI 09 MAY 2008, Page 096
Good morning, Mr Philippoussis
By DARYL TIMMS
THE Scud has gone back to school at Williamstown.
But Mark Philippoussis is the teacher, not the student, at Bayside Secondary College, which offers tennis as a subject under the guidance of former Tennis Australia national coach John Trickey.
Philippoussis, who is recovering from knee surgery, is at the school on a casual basis to help the budding students. But he plans to return to the pro circuit.

Re: returning?....
I can't believe that I am saying this...
I don't want Mark to try to come back. I want him to start with the rest of his life and to build his health and strength up so he can enjoy other challenges and adventures.
I really don't think he should punish his body anymore. He is years behind the rest of the pack now having hardly played in 3 years. and they are all young, fit and strong out on the tour.
If there was a 100% guarantee that Mark would remain healthy then I wouldn't be feeling so strongly about this. I'm sure that his spirit is willing and healing but the body is out of his control

Re: returning?....
I agree... i think the fact his body hasn't been right since end of 2003 is a clear indication that it just can't handle the pressure and impact of the tour anymore. I also have to question Mark's true desire and commitment. We've all heard the same speech about making a comeback and being dedicated, but for various reasons Mark never seems to stick to the grind and make it no.1 priority.
When you see players like Moya, Haas, Ferrero, Safin.. top players similar to Mark struggling to win matches - yet they've been playing much more tennis over the past 2 years then Mark I have serious doubts no matter how much his heart is willing I don't think he has the footwork and fitness to be competitive against top players.
If the recent pics of Mark at the beach showed he's made some sort of effort over the past 5 months to manage his weight and get toned I'd be more supportive... but that hasn't happened. Mark should be proud of all he has achieved and focus on something new. I fear trying to come back will only end in another major injury or heartbreaking defeats.

Re: returning?....
If Mark's body guaranteed 100% co-operation, it would be wonderful to see Mark come back for an official and final farewell at the Australian Open. I always wondered if that was part of his motivation for that WC playoff.
I agree, the other players you mention were always better off that Mark fitness wise and are struggling pretty badly on tour. Moya does have better periods of success though. I will be trying to watch the French Open (or tape ) for the final farewell match for Guga as he retires.
I do want the pain and misery for Mark to stop, no matter what his decision is +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Re: returning?....
Jill and Val you said it well. Seeing as there are no assurances that his body will hold up and given his history woth chronic injuries it seems like Mark would be best to hang up the racquets. However if he can stay fit it would be terrific too see him have that one last hurrah, which I personally wouldn't right off just yet.
Someone mentioned that guys like Ferrero, Moya and Haas are struggling, however I would have to disagree with that. Ferrero is a consistent top 30 player, his ranking has been stable for quite a few years now, not too mention the fact that he also outplayed Nadal too beat him in Rome a matter of days ago, he's also a little man in a big mans game. Moya struggled for a while, if my memory serves me well I think his struggle came just after a Shoulder reconstruction. Moya has found his feet though, and he has been just outside the top 10 for quite a while now. Haas has played some fantastic tennis in the past few years, but he has also had some unfortunate injuries whilst being in perhaps career best form.
So in my oppinion if Mark can just finally stay fit for the length of time that these 3 guys have then I can't see why Mark can't achieve similar success to what these guys have been over the last few seasons. Once again though it comes back too that big question.... Can Mark's body hold up?

Re: returning?....
I don't doubt Mark's ability he's just as good if not better then Moya /Ferrero/Safin... but he is no where near as fit and mobile and that is my no.1 concern. Yes Mark is a bigger guy, but in regards to general fitness and footwork I think that's one vital area Mark has dropped considerably over the past few years.
He has the style of tennis to make a solid return, but if he's not in supreme physical shape then there's very little hope of a comeback even if he stays injury free.

Re: returning?....
everyone!
I think Mark would be GREAT at instructing and coaching tennis students, especially children, but probably also elite adults. I would like to see him do this.

Re: returning?....
As the weeks roll by my curiosity grows.. what exactly is Mark doing in Melbourne??
I'm thinking about it a little more today with the news of Australian journeyman Alun Jones retiring. If Mark has decided to retire will we even get a proper announcement? I sincerely hope we do... but if he isn't retiring I'd expect to hear some news soon... but then again, I've been expecting news for the past 2 months!
It's all just a little odd in my opinion... if Mark was hitting again, you'd think news of it would creep out to the press. I know Mark was confused about playing and not sure about his knee rehabilitation... but as July approaches his decision must be almost clear-cut now... shouldn't it????
Val I'm no dream analyst but if i tried to decode that... Mark returns to tennis in some minor tournaments overseas but injures himself and doesn't end up playing them... hahaha, hopefully this completely wrong.

Re: returning?....
Well, it seems that Mark is planning to come back to the seniors tour.
I just hope Mark stays healthy (and happy!) in whatever his plans are ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
