Mark Playing - Aus. Open Legends Event - starting Sunday, 25th Jan 09
Australian Open
Draw is not available as yet for the Legends event.
Original post - 22nd December 2008
Mark Philippoussis to return as veteran
MARK Philippoussis is expected to play at next month's Australian Open . . . but as a veteran.
It's believed Philippoussis will today announce his intention to return to competition in the Open's legends event.
The 32-year-old Wimbledon and US Open finalist will be up against past grand slam winners such as Pat Cash and Mats Wilander during the second week of the Open.
He's back on the court after another year wrecked by injury and is planning to ease back against former greats of the game.
Philippoussis is having a practice session at Melbourne Park today.

Mark Philippoissis to play Australian Open legends but denies retirement
www.foxsports.com.au
December 22, 2008
MARK Philippoussis will line up in the Legends tournament for senior players at next month's Australian Open, but insists he¿s planning a return to the main circuit in 2009.
The 32-year-old has not played an ATP event since November 2006 but said that he still had the enthusiasm to mount a comeback bid.
A former Davis Cup star and Wimbledon and US Open finalist, the Victorian had considered retirement in the last two years as he battled knee injuries.
He will play doubles at the Australian Open seniors event alongside popular Frenchman Henri Leconte as a way of easing himself into a comeback.
Philippoussis will also play in an eight-man exhibition tournament in Adelaide the week before the Australian Open.
He is continuing to receive rehab for knee injuries and said he would take a cautious approach next year.
"There's no timeline," Philippoussis said.
"I'll just see how the body's feeling and take it from there."
He wants to play in the Australian Open again and is also eyeing a return to the Davis Cup squad.
He will start off in second-tier Challenger events to gain match experience and ranking points.
"I have to go to the lower (events)," he said.
"That's what I want to do and that's what I expect to do."
Philippoussis' latest knee injury came during his attempt to win a wildcard for the Australian Open in 2007.
His last ATP event was in Maui in November 2006.

Re: Press conference TODAY, also Mark to return as veteran at AUS OPEN
val how nice is it to hear he hopes to get back into davis cup, even if it's just as a hitting partner or doubles player. If he can get fit, playing doubles is a very reasonable goal.
got home late today so haven't seen the news, he apparently had a little hit before the media.. hope to see something on the late news.

Yes Jill, it was nice to hear about Mark and his plans to help out with the Davis Cup Team but he is hopeful to atleast be able to play doubles.
I still don't feel that positive about a full return to the atp tour but I hope I'm wrong and Mark fulfills his wish for one more comeback.
The best coverage was channel 10. I won't be making a clip to put up for a couple of days though as none of my cabling is setup for direct transfer anymore.

Re: Press conference TODAY, also Mark to return as veteran at AUS OPEN
That was great seeing Mark hitting balls again today, I'm quite surprised that he's playing this event, even though it is just Legends Doubles, Its still a big step for a guy who apparently hadn't done much hitting of late. It was specifically pleasing to hear Mark talk so positively about a comeback, its amazing that he's 32 and yet he still wants to come back.
Personally I'm not sure if playing in Adelaide is a good idea, if I remember right, Mark said not too long ago that he hadn't done much hitting of late, if thats true then going up against a guy like Gael Monfils could potentially be a massacre. That being said though Mark is back playing quicker than I expected him too, so who knows where his body is realy at.

hey lucas,
I know its a bit scary for him to play monfils, but the other players in adelaide should be good trials for mark i think - considering both pim pim and taylor dent are using adelaide as an attempt to start a comeback from injury. they're both in the same position as mark i think. or maybe its just wishful thinking on my part lol
