Re: Mark Playing - Aus. Open Legends Event - starting Sunday, 25th Jan 09
It was one hell of a match. Until this week, no-one expected Verdasco to get this far, let alone take Rafa to 5,
As I'm rooting for Roger, I'm hoping rafa will be tired, but with his stamina, I'm sure with over 40 hrs to his next match, he'll recover.
With the Legends final having been postponed, you just hope the ladies don't go on for ever tomorrow & you get to see it

Did they play the final?
I've checked the AO site & there's nothing about them playing either today or tomorrow

Re: Mark Playing - Aus. Open Legends Event - starting Sunday, 25th Jan 09
It seems to have been cancelled completely. Perhaps there was no time to reschedule or one or more of the players had other committments and couldn't stay any longer.
The mens semi final was a real thriller the other night but the women's final was a real yawn. I'm glad that I didn't pay $300.00 tickets to see that!
People may not agree but I find it far more interesting to watch best of 5 sets in the mens than the best of 3 sets in womens. I am a female and definately do not agree that the women deserve the same money as the mens in the Grand Slam events. Let's see them play best of 5 sets
With the exception of watching Jelena Dockic's exciting matches the bulk of the women's matches weren't very interesting for me.
I hope it's a great men's final tonight.

Re: Mark Playing - Aus. Open Legends Event - starting Sunday, 25th Jan 09
I agree... women's tennis is a joke most of the time... maybe it's to do with hormones - but it seems the tennis can be so erratic amongst the women - even the very top players can play like amateurs on any given day.
i couldn't even bring myself to watch the final after seeing it was 3-0. All i kept thinking about was the poor people who were silly enough to pay to watch it. I too don't agree with the equal pay. It should be a similar amount, but certainly not the same when the difference in quantity and quality of the tennis is so great.

I agree with the two of you. I simpl;y can't understand why the girls get the same prize money as the mens. Just take 3 of the men's matches - Fed vs Berdych, Rafa vs Verdasco & today's final and they sowed they earned every penny and there were several other long close matches which shows what a tough time the men have to get through a Slam.
Whereas in the ladies there are only a few close matches with high quality tennis on both sides which are worth watching..
I tried to check out the Legends final & the only thing on the results for that event was that Mansoor Bahrami/John Fitzgerald beat Mark & Leconte by default when they retired at 3-4 down.
I tried clicking on other day got no results

Jill I agree with you, fancy paying a large amount to watch Serena walk all over Safina. I knew she'd win, but didn't think it would be so 1-sided.
Val, you almost got your wish with regards to the men's final. It was great until 2-1 in the 5th set when Roger's mind & body refused to co-operate with each other. He wanted to win that match so much that his brain just wasn't working at 100%. And after playing near tennis for his last 2 matches, his serve just wasn't firing, so he wasn't getting many chep points that way. And we all know who is most likely to win the point when Rafa is rallying from the baseline.

It was a great final and Rafa is a deserving winner but I do think that Roger lost the match and gave it to Rafa. He really is inside Rogers head.
I look forward to a few more grand slam finals between these two in the next year or two. I wonder if Rafa can take the US open and the complete all 4 surfaces?
