Ritz lobs $50k more to centre
By Ron Shillingford, ron@cfp.ky
Monday 19th January, 2009 Posted: 16:30 CIT (21:30 GMT)
World class tennis stars once again clamoured to the Ritz–Carlton court over the weekend for the Cayman Classic Charity tournament.
Layman appreciates Ryans help.
The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre was once again the sole beneficiary for the sixth year.
Thrilling tennis action and lots of fun was promised from the likes of Jimmy Arias, Johan Kriek, Luke Jensen, Murphy Jensen, Ellis Ferreira, Jay Berger, Michael Pernfors and Aaron Krickstein.
They teamed up with local amateurs with the Cayman Crisis Centre emerging as the clear winner.
Ritz–Carlton developer Michael Ryan and his partners are, perhaps, some of the most ardent and active supporters of the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre.
He said: “I believe it is essential that we have a professional organisation and safe place in our community for women and children in crisis.
“The Cayman Islands Crisis Centre is filling a critical need and we are constantly looking for ways to support it.
“My commitment to supporting the centre is matched only, perhaps, by my passion for tennis. I truly believe there is no worthier cause.”
For the kids there was a bouncy castle, snow cones and face painting.
The eventual champions were Krickstein and Keith Boheim with the runners up being Kriek and Erik Burgdorf.
Third place went to Berger and Sue Burgdorf.
Len Layman, chairman of the Crisis Centre, was pleased with the $50,000 cheque Ryan handed over. Last year it was over $70,000 but the event had a higher profile and was not done in conjunction with the Cayman Cookout like this time.
Layman said: “I think that everybody’s facing tougher times this year but that doesn’t in any way negate the need and I just think that it’s spectacular that the Ritz–Carlton has once again stepped up to the plate.
“Michael Ryan and his group has once again gone out of his way to help out the Crisis Centre.
“For all that they do for us, they should be an example for other corporations and businesses on the island to be good corporate citizens. The Crisis Centre is just so thankful for their support.”
Layman is appreciative of this donation because the centre’s budget is around $450,000 but the government only provides about $300,000.
“The rest we have to raise through the community,” he said. “We spend the majority of our efforts trying to raise funds and things such as this come a long way towards helping us. The Ritz has been here for us year in, year out and we greatly appreciate their support.”
Ryan said: “This is really something we love to do and it makes us feel we’re giving a little something back about something we really care about.
“In the community it’s a real issue which needs addressing and we’re really glad that we can raise awareness in a substantial way so that they can meet their budgets and concentrate on their needs to get things done and not focusing on raising money.
“With the Cookout going on at the same weekend we thought it we would make it more about having fun. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and had a great time and we still raised a lot of money for them.
“We’ve actually already done about 30 grand for them this year and our goal for the whole year is to get over 100 grand so we’ll go on until we get it.”
Ritz–Carlton tennis pro Thomas Neuert thoroughly enjoyed it too.
He said: “Yesterday was kind of tough because of the hurricane level winds we had but it didn’t rain and we had a great turnout. I think everybody loved it and we had a nice VIP tent.
“The competition was very good. It always gets a bit tougher on the second day as everybody is moving on to the quarter–finals, semis and finals. It was fantastic to have 12 pros come out and the exhibition from the Jensen brothers.
“We’re already looking forward to next year’s Cayman Classic, probably the second or third weekend in January with the Cookout.
“Now we’re looking forward to the Legends tournament, April 24–26. That’s going to be a huge event. Right now confirmed we have Goran Ivanisevic, Mark Philippoussis, Michael Chang, Jim Courier and Jimmy Arias, plus one other.

Wilander, Ferreira Join Courier, Ivanisevic, Philippoussis In Grand Cayman
3.5.09 InsideOut Sports & Entertainment
NEW YORK, March 5, 2009 - InsideOut Sports & Entertainment today announced that Mats Wilander, Wayne Ferreira, Mikael Pernfors, Jimmy Arias and Karel Novacek will join Jim Courier, Goran Ivanisevic and Mark Phillippoussis in the eight-player field at The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships to be held April 23-26 in Grand Cayman. The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships is the fourth of eight events on the 2009 Outback Champions Series, the global tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over.
“We are looking forward to our second year of Outback Champions Series tennis at The Residences at The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman with a terrific field of tennis legends,” said Jon Venison, co-founding partner of InsideOut Sports & Entertainment and the Outback Champions Series. “This event is the only Outback Champions Series event played on a clay court and will provide for some exciting tennis played in one of the most beautiful and luxurious resorts in the world.”
The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships will feature a field of eight champion players competing in a single knock-out format event, vying for $150,000 in prize money and ranking points that determine the year-end No. 1 on the Outback Champions Series. Ticket, travel and tournament information can be found by visiting www.ChampionsSeriesTennis.com. In 2008, Courier won the inaugural event last year defeating Ferreira 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1) in the championship match.
Wilander won seven major singles titles in his career, including three French and three Australian Open titles. In 1988, he won three major singles titles, capped by defeating Ivan Lendl in the final of the U.S. Open that earned him the No. 1 world ranking. Known as one of the best clay-court players of all-time, Wilander won 33 career singles titles and helped Sweden to Davis Cup titles in 1984, 1985 and 1987.
Ferreira, a silver medalist in doubles at the 1992 Olympic Games, has been one of the most successful players on the Outback Champions Series since the tennis circuit began in 2005. The South African has won three tournament titles and finished as runner-up two other times, including the Grand Cayman event in 2008. In 2006, he won the title in Houston, defeating Magnus Larsson in the final, while in 2007, he won titles in Naples, Fla., (defeating Krickstein in the final) and Dallas (defeating Jim Courier in the final.)
Pernfors is best known for his run to the singles final at the French Open in 1986, where he defeated Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker before losing to Ivan Lendl in the final. He won three ATP singles titles during his career, including the Canadian Open in 1993 where he came from 2-5 down in the third set to defeat Todd Martin in the final. Pernfors helped Sweden to the Davis Cup final in 1986 and won back-to-back NCAA singles titles for the University of Georgia in 1984 and 1985.
Arias turned pro at age 16 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 5 in April 1984. He enjoyed his best year in 1983 with four singles titles, including the U.S. Clay Court Championships and the Italian Open. That same year, at age 19, he reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open. Arias won five career titles, all in singles, in his career and represented the United States in Davis Cup play in 1984, 1986 and 1987. Last year in Grand Cayman, Arias registered his first career win over John McEnroe en route to finishing third at the event.
Novacek achieved a career high ranking of No. 8 in the world and posted the most significant results of his career at the U.S. Open, where he reached the singles semifinals in 1994, losing to Michael Stich, and in doubles with Martin Damm, he reached the doubles final in 1993, losing to Ken Flach and Robert Seguso. He won 13 career ATP singles titles.

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
Nicky we all feel this way when we don't hear any news, and then when we do it's about mark partying all night... i know it's very frustrating and disappointing.
Mark has always been a walking/talking contradiction... says one thing, then does another. If he hasn't been training, then even against these older men he will get beat and taught a lesson.. I hope he's been hitting, we will soon find out how much if the results are poor.
But on the flip side - it's a nice way to make a living playing these legends events... he has fun, still gets paid to play and travels to exotic locations! I'd like to see him become a dominate player in these champions series - the money is quite good if you win the event, but like the main tour you'll have to be fit and in proper training.

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
The way I look at it Nicky is if you don't have any expectations then you won't get disappointed!
Mark's been off the tour for so long, it feels like years that I can see that there will be times where he is going to party and it is going to make the news. We don't really know what Mark has been upto.
I just hope he hasn't been idle all this time and has worked hard on his fitness and maybe other interests as well as he has had far too much free time on his hands.
Hope all goes well and Mark does well in the coming weeks (months etc..).
I still don't think Mark will cut it on the atp tour if that is his plan as he is too far behind all the younger and fitter guys but he can be very successful and happy playing the champions tour if he wants it.

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
woo hoo Mark won his match!
Great result considering it was against a very tough opponent AND on clay!
6-7(3), 6-4, 13-11(TB)
Well done Mark! I have feeling he'll be playing Jim Courier in the semi's - so he's got a great chance to try and knock off the defending champ!
GO MARK!++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Philippoussis beats wind, Ferreira
Bob Larson's Tennis News
GRAND CAYMAN, April 23, 2009 – Mark Philippoussis of Australia battled winds gusting up to 35 mph and the steady baseline game of Wayne Ferreira Thursday to advance into the semifinals of the $150,000 The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, (13-11 in Champions Tie-Break) victory over the defending finalist. Also advancing with a quarterfinal win Thursday in the eight-player event was Jimmy Arias of the United States, who defeated Mats Wilander of Sweden 6-2, 6-2. The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships is the fourth of eight events on the 2009 Outback Champions Series, the global tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over.
"It was tough conditions today, especially with the wind," said Philippoussis of his win over Ferreira, played on a red clay court. "We did the best we could and the first match is always tough. I haven’t played in a long time with my injury, and it’s great to get back out there – and with no pain."
Philippoussis, who has struggled with multiple knee surgeries in the last few years, converted on his fourth match-point opportunity against Ferreira in the Champions Tie-Break, played in lieu of a third set. He jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first set, but was broken back in the seventh game, before losing the first-set in a 7-3 tie-breaker. In the second set, Philippoussis and Ferreira exchanged breaks in the first seven games, before Philippoussis broke for a 5-3 lead, evening the match two games later with the 6-4 second-set win.
Philippoussis, 32, is playing in his third career Outback Champions Series event and said Thursday he still holds out hope of one day returning to the ATP Tour. He said is main goal for the week is to physically get through the tournament without pain and trouble with his knee.
"My ambition still is to get back on the tour," said Philippoussis, the 2003 Wimbledon finalist who last played against ATP level competition at the 2007 Hopman Cup mixed team event in Perth, Australia. "It's been tough with my injury because I have been unable to get fit enough to play competitive tennis."
Following knee surgery in early 2007, Philippoussis returned to competitive tournament tennis at the Outback Champions Series event in Dallas in 2007, losing the third-place match to John McEnroe. His only other Outback Champions Series tournament came earlier this year when he finished with a 1-2 round-robin record in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He will next play the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal match between defending champion Jim Courier and Mikael Pernfors of Sweden.
Ferreira expressed disappointment in the result and not being able to have another chance to win the title in Grand Cayman after losing last year’s final to Courier.
"It's disappointing after being so successful last year and of course it's always tough to lose a close match," said the South African. "I went down fast in the first two sets. I had a slow start. Last year, I was able to play though the wind and this year I found it more difficult."
For the second straight year, Arias was able to post a big match-victory in Grand Cayman with his win over Wilander. Last year, Arias posted his first tournament match victory of any kind against John McEnroe en route to a third-place finish, his best career result on the Outback Champions Series.
"I came on the court with confidence," said Arias of his win over Wilander. "I’m a local. I’ve played on this court a million times. What was strange, the wind was blowing but not on my side of the court. Everything went my way, even when Mats got a point, I fought for it to be taken away."
The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman Legends Championships features a field of eight champion players competing in a single knock-out format event, vying for $150,000 in prize money and ranking points that determine the year-end No. 1 on the Outback Champions Series. Ticket, travel and tournament information can be found by visiting www.ChampionsSeriesTennis.com. In 2008, Courier won the inaugural event defeating Ferreira 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1) in the championship match.
The schedule of play for the remainder of the event is as follows;
Friday, April 24
Starting at 6 pm
Pat Cash vs. Karel Novacek
Jim Courier vs. Mikael Pernfors
Saturday, April 25
Starting 1 pm
