Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
Mark lost his second match against Jim Courier in straight sets, 2-6, 5-7.
Sounds as though Mark had a very loud crowd cheering him on
Good Luck to Mark in his next Match!

Saturday tennis action
Tennis enthusiasts couldn’t ask for a better day on Saturday. Clear skies, mild weather and great tennis marked day two of the Cayman Legends Championship. The tennis greats who took to the court of The Residences at The Ritz Carlton did not disappoint. In all the forms of the game at all times of the day they served well, made solid returns and looked like they were still in their youth.
The action kicked off at 1pm with an entertaining exhibition doubles match as the duo of Mikael Pernfors and Mats Wilander took on Wayne Ferreira and Karel Novacek. These older statesmen played with an extra hop in their step as they mixed serious serves with playful returns that saw it all from shots between the legs to no–look back–handers that hugged the lines. Though the crowd was surprisingly sparse it made its presence felt often with many rounds of appreciative applause. In the end though Mikael and Mats would turn it up a notch when it mattered most and come away with the win. The final score saw Pernfors and Wilander claim first set 6–4, Ferreira and Novacek win the second 6–3 before Pernfors and Wilander prevailed in third tiebreaker set 10–5.
From there came a wave of serious tennis. The semi–finals of the singles event marched ahead in dramatic style. The first match–up at 3pm would see an ultra–intense Jimmy Arias, fresh off his quarterfinal win over Wilander on Thursday evening, take on crowd favourite Pat Cash, armed with his quintessential checkerboard headband and fresh momentum from beating Novacek on Friday. Arias had his eyes squarely on a win and played relentless, unleashing more than his fair share of deadly serves. Cash meanwhile did not back down and made graceful returns. Ultimately though Arias won out and the final score saw Cash win the first set 6–4, Arias claim the second 7–5 (on a tiebreaker) and Arias take the third set 10–8. The other semi–final at 6pm would be rather anti–climatic. In spite of enormous support from many boisterous Australian fans, Mark Philippoussis would be no match for a determined Jim Courier. American Courier would take the match in straight sets with the final score reading 6–2, 7–5.
The finals of the competition take place tomorrow. Starting from 1pm The Residences at Ritz Carlton will see the third place match between Pat Cash and Mark Philippoussis and the championship match (which serves as a re–match from last year’s competition) as Jimmy Arias battles Jim Courier.

Shame Mark lost, he was up 2-0 and had break point in the first set but must of lost his way to lose it 6-2. Jim does mention on twitter that he spent a couple of weeks preparing on clay and trains quite regularly for these events. I don't have reason to believe Mark is putting as much energy and time into his tennis as Jim.
I just wish he'd stop making these silly statements "My ambition still is to get back on the tour" because i don't think he's serious about it.
Once he is back training every day, has got his weight to low 90kg's (like he said he was aiming for in December) and has a timeframe of when he'll start playing challengers then i would take such a comment seriously. Even though it's unrealistic he'll make it back on tour - he is yet to show or explain to the media / public what he's doing or planning to ATTEMPT a comeback. It's just getting more absurd that he keeps saying things like this but there is no mention of a plan or process... months and years keep rolling on with no hint of progress to actually achieve a return to the tour.
The saying goes - actions speak louder then words!
But that's just my 2cents... and i'll keep repeating myself propbably every time Mark comes out and makes a statement like that until he officially announces he has no "ambitions" of getting back on the tour.
Back on topic - best of luck against Cash... although that may be a challenge going by Jim's twitter - i am assuming Mark is one of the boys he's referring to "getting their post-court game on" at the hotel bar

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
Mark rarely tells the media how he really feels or what he is upto, if ever. He's been burned enough by them not to open up.
I'm just grateful that Mark is playing, pain free and healthy. I would love for Mark to make it back to the tour and have a chance to play one more time at the Australian Open and Wimbledon but its a tough ask mentally and physicaly and only time will tell if Mark is able to achieve it.
I think that's abit harsh Jill to say Mark makes silly statements just because he says he is planning to get back to the tour.
I doubt we will get any more guidance on Marks progress for months to come until Mark himself knows how he is progressing physically and mentally.
In my opinion, at times I think the mental fight for fitness will be harder than the physical.
Mark is still on his journey back and if he believes he can do it, then that's enough for me and I'll keep hoping the journey ends well +++++++++++++++++++++++
I'm also just as happy seeing Mark play the seniors and get involved with other aspects of his career.
Val

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
YAY
Mark defeated Pat Cash for 3rd place - 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 (TB).
Good fight back from Mark after loosing the second set so quickly. Mark looks very focused on the ball in the photo on the website. Two wins and a loss to the eventual champion is a very good result.
Australian Mark Philippoussis was able to re-work his game as he battled past fellow countryman, Pat Cash for the 3rd Place spot. Philippoussis jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set 6-1, but Cash shortened the points and took the second set by the same margin. It was in the Champions Tie-break that Philippoussis powered through for the win, 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 (TB).

Re: Mark playing - Outback Champion Series - Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands - April 24 - 26
I do wonder sometimes how many of the old scuders over the years that have disappeared have been through major events like, graduating from University, moving out of home, getting married, having children etc..
Being involved with the Scud Zone since November 1999 (oh my gosh! 10 years this November ) there have been many that disappeared when we moved from starboards and then many here again as things have gone quiet for Mark over the past few years.
