Giant fundraiser to help bushfire victims

February 12th, 2009

THE biggest names in Australian entertainment and sport will join up for a special Victorian bushfire fundraiser tonight, to be televised by Channel 9.

Australia Unites - The Victorian Bushfire Appeal will be launched at 7.30pm and is set to become the most significant fundraising effort in Australian history.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and the Premier of Victoria, John Brumby, will join the Australian cricket team and entertainers Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, radio stars Hamish and Andy and Merrick and Rosso, international models Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale to raise money for the victims of the fires.

Small screen stars Rove McManus, Dave Hughes, Kate Ritchie, Roy Billing, Martin Dingle Wall, Kat Stewart, Rodger Corser, Ben Mendelsohn, Molly Meldrum and Magda Szubanski will also take part.

Sporting identities will include Shane Warne; Olympic gold medallists Cathy Freeman, Liesel Jones and Grant Hackett; AFL's Chris Judd and Shane Crawford; Melbourne Storm star Billy Slater; Fatty Vautin and Matty Johns of the NRL Footy Show; AFL legend Ron Barassi; tennis player Mark Philippoussis; V8 champs Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander; and Bali bombing survivor and former AFL player, Jason McCartney.

Performers include The Living End, Jessica Mauboy, Colin Hay (Men At Work), Jimmy Barnes, Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, Kate Ceberano, John Williamson and Angry Anderson.

Eddie McGuire will host the coverage from Channel Nine's Melbourne studios, with support from Garry Lyon and James Brayshaw, Livinia Nixon, Jules Lund and Giaan Rooney, who will be rallying troops in the phone room.

Lisa Wilkinson, Karl Stefanovic, Tony Jones, Tracy Grimshaw and Leila McKinnon will report from the fire-ravaged areas across the State.

Aussies abroad, rocked by the bushfires that have ravaged their home country, have united in spirit to support the victims of Australia's worst natural disaster, including Hugh Jackman, Anthony La Paglia, Simon Baker, Rachel Griffiths and Cameron Daddo.

Nine Network CEO, Mr David Gyngell, said he had been overwhelmed by the response.

``The sports and entertainment industries have a fine tradition of pulling together when needed, but the level of support for Australia Unites is unprecedented and we thank everyone for their involvement,'' he said.

Donations will go to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.

To make a donation go to http://www.redcross.org.au/, call the toll free number 1800 811 700, or donate via the Commonwealth Bank.

Like 100,000's of people, I've already made my donation to the Red Cross but I've decided to refocus my next lot of donations to the animal rescue centers Victorian Animal Aid
RSPCA and
Wildlife Victoria

I'm really pleased that Mark will be part of the fund raising.

A few of us have been chatting about this weeks tragic events here.

Shark and Fox to the rescue

EXCLUSIVE: GOLF great Greg Norman and the family of trucking magnate Lindsay Fox are joining forces to bring worldwide attention to the plight of Victoria's Black Saturday fire victims.

Norman and wife Chris Evert will fly into Melbourne from the US next month to raise funds for Victorians who lost loved ones and property in the state's worst natural disaster.

The Great White Shark will be the star attraction of a charity golf day being organised by Fox's son Andrew, head of the Linfox Property Group.

As the 100-day anniversary of the tragedy that claimed 173 lives was marked this week, plans for the celebrity sports day were well advanced.

A who's who of Australia's celebrities is expected to take part in the day, which is being partly sponsored by the Fox family.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will be invited to attend the event at the Commonwealth Golf Club in South Oakleigh on June 28.

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire is assembling a sports group to take part. It is believed to include former tennis stars Todd Woodbridge and Mark Philippoussis.

And it is hoped Wimbledon winner Evert will hold a charity tennis day at Melbourne Park in conjunction with Grand Slam winner Paul McNamee.

Mr Fox said the event was a tribute to those who perished in the disaster as well as a helping hand to those putting their lives back together after the firestorm.

"It's all about raising funds and awareness for the victims of the fires which were a great tragedy," he said. "It's about putting back into the community.

"I'd love to see Kevin Rudd and Greg Norman walking down the fairway together in their polo shirts for a good cause."

Mr Fox, a close friend of Norman for more than 10 years, said the golf great had been shocked and saddened by the devastation of the fire - particularly in Marysville where 34 people were killed and the town was reduced to ashes.

In May, after PGA golf stars donated $100,000 to bushfire victims, Norman said he was deeply touched by the tragedy.

"My heart goes out to all those who were affected by the fires," he said.

"I'm proud to see how our country has rallied behind the relief efforts."

Mr Fox and his family had their own brush with fire in 2004 when they had to flee a blaze that engulfed their Toorak home.

Mr Fox, wife Fiona and their five children and a pet dog escaped as the fire destroyed the two-storey mansion.

"We were lucky to be alive and we lost a lot so I know something of the pain they (the bushfire victims) went through," he said.

"The way Australians have responded to the bushfires has been fantastic."

A spokesman for Mr Rudd said the Prime Minister responded to all invitations and would consider attending the fundraiser once the offer arrived.

Just saw mark on tv... it's lovely to see him involved, a little surprised he didn't make a donation on behalf on Tennis Australia - all the other codes and companies did throughout the night - i'm hoping TA have or will donate big.

It was nice of Eddie to point Mark out and have a chat. There were so many celebrities in the phone room.

It does seem odd that Tennis Australia seems to be just about the only major sporting code in Australia not to step up on the night as with the other codes.

Mark looked great too emoticon

ooh and how cool was Orlando Bloom? It was so nice of him too to spend a few hours there on the phones when it isn't even his countrymen effected.

Tonight the biggest names in Australian entertainment and sport came together to raise money for victims of the catastrophic bushfires that continue to rage throughout Victoria.

The worst natural disaster in Australia’s history has left a terrible death toll and thousands homeless, and 22 fires are still burning.

Joining the Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, and the Premier of Victoria, Mr John Brumby, tonight was a Who’s Who of Australian sporting and entertainment identities who encouraged corporations and the public to dig deep and donate what they could.

Australians opened their hearts and wallets for the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal and pledged a phenomenal $21,502,485* during the Nine Network telecast which, when added to the funds already raised by the Red Cross, results in a staggering $77,202,485 already promised to assist bushfire victims.

Nine Network CEO, Mr David Gyngell, said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of all Australians and hope the donations made tonight help to alleviate some of the hardship ahead for those affected.

“I would also like to thank everyone involved in the production tonight who has done an outstanding job in making this event happen.”

The Red Cross phone room was home to famous faces including radio stars Hamish and Andy, and Merrick and Rosso; international models Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale; film star Orlando Bloom, and stars of the small screen Rove McManus, Dave Hughes, Garry Lyon, James Brayshaw, Livinia Nixon, Jules Lund, Giaan Rooney, Kate Ritchie, Roy Billing, Martin Dingle Wall, Kat Stewart, Rodger Corser, Ben Mendelsohn, Molly Meldrum and Magda Szubanski, plus Lara Bingle, Stephen Curry, Adam Hills, Pete Helliar, Myf Warhurst, Ian "****o" ****son, Rob Mills and Delvene Delaney.

Joining them were Shane Warne; Olympic gold medallists Cathy Freeman, Liesel Jones and Grant Hackett; AFL premiership player Shane Crawford; Melbourne Storm star Billy Slater; Fatty Vautin and Matty Johns of The NRL Footy Show; AFL legend Ron Barassi; tennis player Mark Philippoussis; V8 champs Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander; and Bali bombing survivor and former AFL player, Jason McCartney.

Viewers were entertained by performances by The Living End, Jessica Mauboy, Colin Hay (Men At Work), Jimmy Barnes, Lee Kernaghan, Shannon Noll, Kate Ceberano, John Williamson, and Angry Anderson.

Eddie McGuire hosted the coverage from Channel Nine’s Melbourne studios, crossing to the fire-ravaged locations where Nine reporters Lisa Wilkinson, Karl Stefanovic, Tony Jones, Tracy Grimshaw and Leila McKinnon have been telling the stories of the past week’s devastation.

All donations received go to the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund. The appeal will continue with the aim to relieve the suffering and heartache of those affected and donations can be made by going on-line at www.redcross.org.au, calling the toll free number 1800 811 700, or donating via the Commonwealth Bank.

hi nikki welcome to the boards!

I wouldn't exactly say he's been a naughty boy... parking illegally in chapel St is more foolish then naughty... getting caught was probably a long time coming and a good lesson learned emoticon emoticon

... it's just unfortunate for mark that almost every mistake or error in judgement makes the papers!

Welcome Nikki emoticon

Unfortunately for Mark, every move he makes ends up in the papers which I still think it is ironic that these daily news papers are really only trash tabloids.

Hopefully Mark has learnt his lesson on where to park because there is big money to be made by local councils with fines and you can get hit many times per day! It has long been a big news story on the talk back shows on radio about how money hungry the metermaids are here.
