Well said Jill.

This was an incredibly courageous of Mark to open up like this to the media and to the public.

I sincerely hope that Mark has all the professional help that he can get. Both in financial guidance and also help for Mark on a personal level so that he can get past these difficult times and the bouts of depression he has suffered over the past 2 years. With help, Mark can now move forward and set goals and with positive re-enforcement he can rebuild the next phase of his life. Aterall, Mark is only 32 and there is so much more that Mark can do and succeed at.

Val

First of all - HELLO GUYS, I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tried to access here a while ago and then life and events took over - but I am actually here in Australia and not London (on a holiday) which prompted me to check out the Zone again.

I was sad to read Mark's story - unfortunately as he says, it is happening to alot of people at the moment - to me to, although not the same scale, in as far as I was made redundant for the 3rd time in my life back in March. My comparison is that if you cannot do the job you have always done (for whatever reason - in his case, his injuries) it throws you out of whack. And finances can run away with you. I expect Mark has - excuse the pun - taken his eye off the ball - over this and now things have caught up with a bang.

I am sure there are many things he can do (workwise) even if it isn't playing tennis. he just needs to find it.

I wish him all the luck in taking a new direction in his life.

I have no problem with you removing my initial post Val. My opinion stands. I stated what many think. If censoring your board in case Mark might read something constructive is your way of showing support for him, have at it. Time for some reality.

It disappoints me Zoe that you think this is the time and the place to berate Mark for the choices he has made. This is not what Scud Central is about, nor ever has been, there are countless other boards to do that.

If people don't like this place, the rules and guidelines that have been part of Scud Zone/Scud Central from the beginning, then please don't post.

There are times that these rules are heavily monitored and enforced. This is one of those times.

Mark needs support, positive re-enforcement and constructive suggestions, not criticism.

There is enough negativity out there in other forums and news sites that will provide plenty of criticism and judgements by people.

Val

I've just written a massive post, but decided to delete it. But I will say having a son in his late 20's suffering with depression, I believe I have a good understanding of it.
All I will say is, Mark, now you will find out who your friends are, who is worth knowing and caring about, and just how valuable family is. The tough times will bring out the best in these people, and the worst in the rest!

As we all know, once you hit the bottom the only way is up.
Stuff the media, stuff the naysayers, look after yourself and those who matter, and let them look after you.

I will enjoy watching you rise once again in whatever you choose to do.

I 'luv ya to bits'.....always have, always will.

Re: My money's gone, life is tough

Heard about this from Anne, then there was a short article in my local paper.
It's sad that this has happened to him. When you're on the up & the money keeps rolling in, you feel it will last for ever, but unfortunately tennis is a relatively short career & Mark has had so many stumbling blocks with his injuries, that in his case the well ran dry even earlier than for an average player - even Bjorn Borg had money troubles, but got through it.
I hope he gets good professional advice on how to solve this, hopefully without losing his home and that in the future, if he does earn more money through exhibitions etc, he will invest some of it wisely & not blow it on cars etc, so he has something put aside for a rainy day.

Re: My money's gone, life is tough

This is a sad and stressful time for Mark. It sounds like he's found himself in the same position many others are in: a reduced income, debts that were incurred during a time when he had or expected to have a high income, a treacherous real estate market and little or no good legal or financial advice when he needed it. Not to mention the stress of ongoing knee problems and an uncertain earning future from tennis. Geez, who wouldn't be depressed?

I don't know if Mark reads this site, but I think he does. So I hope he knows that many of us understand what he's going through and deeply sympathize with his dilemmas -- the physical, the psychological and the financial. I see posts above from others who have had financial problems or problems with depression. I certainly have had depressive episodes in my life and I know there are many methods of treatment out there. I send my best wishes to Mark and hope that he finds what works for him. And I hope he also realizes that many of the present financial woes that people all over the world are experiencing during this recession are going to go away eventually. You just ride it out, regroup, or start over with a new focus.

I send my best wishes to Mark. If nothing else, he'll come out of this knowing who his true supporters are.
