AdvertisementAustralia's Mark Philippoussis secured a late wildcard entry to Wimbledon, the All England Club announced on Friday.
The 2003 Wimbledon runner-up staked his claim for a place in the main draw with an impressive showing at Queen's, the West London tennis tournament regarded as a warm-up for the Grand Slam event.
Philippoussis was knocked out in the third round at Queen's by Chilean sixth seed and world No.11 Fernando Gonzalez, who won their match 6-2 3-6 6-3.
Philippoussis' 176th world ranking was strong enough for him to be allowed to play qualifying for Wimbledon, which starts on June 26, and he had said he was prepared to take that route.
"I'm definitely ready to qualify, whatever it takes," he said earlier this week.
Now he doesn't have to, and the 29-year-old's flagging tennis career could be back on track.
Philippoussis, a wildcard entrant at Queen's, won two matches on Wednesday after rain postponed his first-round appearance.
He easily beat South Africa's Wesley Moodie 6-3 6-4 before upsetting 11th seed and World No.25 Sebastien Grosjean of France 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-3.
Jelena Dokic, the world No.681 in the WTA rankings, was granted permission to play ladies singles qualifying at Wimbledon.

This is great news! Now Mark can go play more tennis on grass this week and fine-tune his game!!!
The matches at Queens must have sealed a spot
GO MARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Re: Phillippoussis secures Wimbledon Wildcard - YES!! GO MARK!!!!!!!!!!
This article by Leo Schlink implies that Mark has been offered a Wildcard at Ordina for next week.

MARK Philippoussis is clinging to remote hopes of a Wimbledon wildcard amid uncertainty on his immediate future.
The All England Club is still to distribute its five remaining men's singles wildcards.
One will be reserved for a British playoff winner. Four others are earmarked for overseas players.
But unless Wimbledon has a change of heart, Philippoussis will have to contest qualifying at Roehampton from Monday.
If so, he will have to reject a wildcard to play at Rosmalen in the Netherlands, where he had his best result last season, reaching the semi-finals. If he is unable to return, he cannot defend the 75 rankings points he holds there.
A worst-case rankings scenario has Philippoussis stumbling from 176th in the world to 208th and losing in Wimbledon qualifying.
Philippoussis was hoping yesterday Wimbledon would soften its stance. The club indicated this week it was unlikely his wildcard application would be approved.
"If I do end up getting it, then I'd like to go to the tournament in the Netherlands, like I did last year," Philippoussis said.
"They're holding a wildcard there for me at Rosmalen. Not all of them (Wimbledon wildcards) have been given away, so there's a little bit of hope
"But my mindset, coming here to England, was that I was ready to play qualies.
"If I do get one (a wildcard), it's makes things a lot easier."
Chilean Fernando Gonzalez ended Philippoussis's Queen's Club campaign with a hard-fought 6-2 3-6 6-3 win.

Re: Phillippoussis secures Wimbledon Wildcard - YES!! GO MARK!!!!!!!!!!
He deserved it after his showing at Queens.
Now it's fingers crossed time yet again hoping that he will get a good draw for the 1st couple of rounds at least.
The one thing is that he (& Henman) is going to be one of the dangerous 'floaters' and we know he can beat anyone on grass on a good day.

Re: Phillippoussis secures Wimbledon Wildcard - YES!! GO MARK!!!!!!!!!!
It is good news that Mark has a wild card to Wimbledon. Even with having not played often or well over the last year due to injuries, there can be few players who can draw a crowd or give the excitment in their playing as Mark does.
