Rain threatens Wimbledon delays

Rain is set to affect Wimbledon's schedule
Bad weather looks likely to disrupt the first day's play at Wimbledon, with heavy rain forecast across London.
Showers are also predicted for Tuesday in SW19, but conditions should improve during the rest of the week.

The rain could delay Tim Henman's opener - he faces Swede Robin Soderling in the second match on Court One.

Roger Federer is due to begin his men's singles crown defence against Richard Gasquet in the first match on Centre Court, scheduled for 1300 BST.

Andy Murray and Greg Rusedski are not in action on day one of the championships at the All England Club.

Henman is making his 13th appearance in the main draw and is unseeded at the All England Club for the first time since 1996.

But, after dropping down the rankings, he is feeling more positive after his run to the semi-finals at Queen's.

"I am feeling fit and healthy now, so my most important aspect is to go out there and enjoy it," said the 31-year-old.

"If I am healthy and I do that, then I know I am going to play good tennis - and if I am playing good tennis then I still think I am capable of beating anyone.

"Hopefully there are a few good years left yet."

The British number three could face Federer in round two, although the world number one faces a tricky opener.

Gasquet was one of only four men to beat Federer last year - albeit on clay - and retained his Nottingham Open title on Saturday.

But, after his rise up the world rankings was hampered by stomach and elbow injuries in the past year, he knows he faces an uphill task against the three-time champion.

"I know I am getting back to my best, so I have a small chance against Roger," said Gasquet.

"I played a great match with him in Halle. I had four set points in the first, won the second and only lost 6-4 in the third.

If we hadn't been drawn together in the first round, I think I could have reached the fourth round or the quarter finals

"But this is a Grand Slam, and it's on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, so it won't be easy to play against him and beat him.

"If we hadn't been drawn together in the first round, I think I could have reached the fourth round or the quarter finals."

Federer has won his last 41 matches on grass and will break Bjorn Borg's record for victories on the surface if he beats Gasquet.

French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne will follow Federer onto Centre Court.

She takes on China's Meng Yuan, with David Nalbandian, a finalist in 2002, completing the programme against South African Wesley Moodie.

Also in action, weather permitting, on the opening day is former champion Martina Hingis.

The former world number one won Wimbledon in 1997 but retired from the game in 2002.

But she has reached the quarter-finals in the year's first two grand slams and won her first title for four years in Rome in an impressive comeback.

The 25-year-old from Switzerland takes on Olga Savchuk of Ukraine in the first match on Court Two.

Women's top seed Amelie Mauresmo and reigning champion Venus Williams will both start their campaigns on Tuesday.
