I thought he played well enough to beat most players on the ATP today. Nadal played a great match. I hope this gives Mark some good feelings going into the indoor hardcourt season.

I totally agree. I think his game today was better than I have seen him play in a long time. His serving was really good, he didn't seem to panic or push too hard, (except for a few glitches when he lost serve but I think so more match practice may solve that) and if he hadn't been unlucky enough to come up against Nadal, I think he would be in the second round now! I'm so glad his hard work seems to be paying off, he seemed to have some confidence back and I hope it will only get better for him for the rest of the season. I think holding someone of Rafael Nadal's calibre to one break per set, after all the injuries etc Mark has had, was excellent! So well done Mark. You did yourself proud today!

I heard a few comments from Mark on the radio this morning on the way to work. Mark felt very upbeat and positive about how he played. I haven't had a chance to watch the match (except for the last 10 mins) as yet but reading comments here and hearing Wally Masur this morning and Fred Stolle talking about the match, I felt that Mark did well and Raphael Nadal is a strong player on any surface.. I've felt that since his performance at Wimbledon.

I caught a brief i/view on tape from Mark prior to walking on court so I'll make a clip this weekend if i can. It's a busy one with Fathers day emoticon

I left the tape running all night and another all day today. If anyone spots an i/view with Mark during the reply of the tennis coverage, please post a time in here emoticon

I look forward to Marks upcoming tournaments. it's exciting to see him playing strong. It was a really tough ask playing the 2nd seed in the first round.

p.s I LOVE THE CURLS! so please stop bagging Mark on his hair, he looks hot no matter what! emoticon

Val

He did extremely well in this match. I am very proud of the effort he put in, considering the disruption of a toe injury, mark did play a great match - probably one of the best he's played in a long time. I would hope he might look over the match and study some area's which he still needs to work on. Nadal did a great job of serving into marks body, esp on his 2nd serve and mark just seemed at a loss on how to handle it. He also needs to work a little on his own 2nd serve. 1st serve is the best in the world, but mark continues to struggle on 2nd serve points..im not sure, maybe its a placement or spin thing... but he only won like 11%.

Overall HEAPS of positives from the match, he moved and scrambled excellent in some parts of the match - maybe just went for the wrong shots at times. But the more he plays the better he will get. He definately couldve beat half the draw with the way he played - he was just unlucky to face nadal.

WELL DONE MARK! emoticon

i have changed my mind val, im loving the long curls... he looked gorgeousemoticon

"Next time I play him hopefully the outcome is a little different.

"If I just stay healthy, I've always said that I have no doubt my best tennis is ahead of me."

I'm glad to hear this, because it's what i have been thinking... mark hasnt played a top player for quite a while now, and nadal was the perfect test. I think Mark can learn alot from the match and now go off and train even harder because he knows there's still things he needs to improve.

There's been quite a few comments about mark's weight.. mark is not fat, but i do think he could still lose a couple of kilo especially up top. He's about 98kg... i think if he drops about 4 or 5 kilo that would help his movement even more. You look at nadal and i dont think there is an ounce of body fat on him, it's all toned.

I just finished watching the tape of Mark's match and I agree with all of you. Against almost anyone else it would have been Mark's victory. Rafa is an extraordinary player, fast, powerful and quick-witted. Mark looked good except for that pesky 2nd serve problem and a bit of movement problem for wide shots and tricky serves. I think a lot of this is just not being completely match tough.

Mark did a great job today against an opponent no one is going to beat and should be proud of his efforts. I consider it a privilege to remain his loyal fan and I never cease trying to bring elements of his beautiful game into my own tennis. (Hey, I can dream can't I!)

I thought mark played really well, against a bloody hard opponent, and there is only positives to take from this...it was good to see mark playing big tennis, and I think he will do well to keep up his training and focus for the rest of the year, and by the time Oz Open comes around, he will more dangerous than ever!!! ++++vibes mark, you make us all very proud!!!+++++

I agree, Patty and David. Hey, if Andy Roddikc can hire Jimmy Connors, why couldn't Mark call up Pete Sampras and ask him to help with revising his 2nd serve? Sampras' 2nd serve was outstanding, and he said (in an old Tennis Channel interview) he was looking for ways to best spend his time in retirement!

I think that would be a great matchup, Marcia. As I recall, Mark's trained with Pete in the past and seemed to enjoy himself.

At this point in mark's career i think he needs to spend at least 6 months with a good coach just to work on a couple of things and really help mark get back into the top50. I have my doubts about mark doing this on his own, when he comes up against top players and starts getting past the early rounds, a coach would really help mark take that next step further.

It's really unfortunate macca hasnt worked out... but there's still plenty of coaches out there - my dream coach would be darren cahill. Agassi retires soon and i'm sure mark knows darren as he coached lleyton hewitt a few years ago. Darren would know how to help and manage mark, having worked with agassi, he could only bring a fresh outlook on mark's career as he enter's his 30's.

but yeah, i dont think it will happen - but i do hope mark seeks a coach with good experience and knowledge of the game.
