Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
Yep, it was sad to see him cramping up at the end, no-one likes to see it, and I quite like the guy anyways, but I guess Andre has problems of his own to contend with, re: his back. He will undoubtedly be sore, and I think his recovery will pay a big part in how he handles this Becker character. If Andre is 80% OK, he will dominate. But for now, I am happy to sit back and think about the match just played

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
Whew! It's been a couple of days and I'm still riding the emotional roller coaster of the great Agassi/Baghdatis match! I can't remember ever being so uncomfortable watching a match, except maybe Mark's match against Tomas Johansson -- the 5th set tiebreak marathon he played at the 1998 US Open (who else remembers this one?)
The part about this whole Agassi retirement thing is that he seems to be absolutely destroying his body to make this last appearance. It is frightening when you think about it. After his first match he can't get out of bed the next day, he has to have a cortisone injection just to make it to his second match, and within a few hours of playing this tough one he can't even stand, has to get a different kind of pain injection ... I guess we'll see tonight how much more he can tolerate. I admire the courage but wonder at the wisdom of jeopardizing his health for the rest of his life.

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
Andre is giving this 150%, it is just in his nature and makeup to get this focused, i dont think quitting is even an option for him. I wish he didn't have this pain, but his willpower and the medication together make him very dangerous. I CERTAINTLY hope there are no long term effects but no-one will ever forget this. I'll be up tonight, Patty! +++vibes+++

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
I do remember that match, Patty. And as for uncomfortable, how about the last sets of Mark's Davis Cup match vs. Ferrero (after the chest muscle pull)?
Andre is a savvy person, as is his wife, and as are the other members of his entourage. I think he would not take undue risks, even though the emotions are obviously running very high. I really hope so, anyway.
David, I hope Andre has a very good day for you today!
Also, the weather link I posted in a separate thread is always updated so you can check it any day. It looks as though no rain is in the area right now (about a half hour before play is to begin).
I hope Mark is having some good practice time ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.

i was there today and i just wanted him to end it. He was in so much obvious pain. Anyone else might have retired 1/2 way thru but Andre braved it thru 4 sets. I'm still crying. ugh this sucks

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
I just watched the match again, really just for Andre's speech. I got so emotional I started to feel naseous and almost threw up. This is a massively emotional time, for Andre, and all the people who love him so much. I just can't believe its over, but also, I think he is the classiest guy around. For you Andre+++all the best in your life and your future, for you and your family+++It has been a real journey, just to even follow Andre, it has really almost been like an affair of the heart, I never stopped believing in him, and he proved to me to be a shining example of the strength of the human spirit++++

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
David, I'm sure this is a very emotional time for you. AA is one of a kind. But as Andy Rodd*ck said yesterday, along the lines of "André's best is yet to come--and that's saying something, given how much he has accomplished already." I am sure we will see André doing commentary from time to time, possibly playing seniors or World Team Tennis, and certainly in his AA Foundation work. Did you know he has raised more $ for charity than any other athlete in any sport (and probably has given more of his time and expertise)? Hey--I wish he would run for public office but I am sure he has no patience for or interest in doing that!

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
Marcia, Rod*ick is right I would say. I think Andre has a lot more to give, but he should enjoy himself, the tour has consumed him for 2 decades! :-) It surely will be nice for him to just relax and not have to worry about getting his body ready for the next tournament etc.
His work for charity is amazing, and I have always loved that about him. But it will be so weird to have a Slam start with no Andre, up until like this year you could set your clock by Andre being at a Slam-he missed VERY few in his career, really. I loved that about him.
Overall, Andre has brought so many people so much happiness. I know that in the most basic sense he really heightened my enjoyment of tennis, inspired me to pick up my raquets again when I was at Uni, and also he made me think a lot more about how you should not give up on your dreams. Its almost impossible for me to describe how I feel. It's so bittersweet-all these great memories, but also knowing that for Andre there will be no comeback, that the game will move on, as it should.
When John McEnroe retired I was very sad, but i did not really understand it, because he was more like a folk hero to me, I was too young to really remember him in his "glory years"-when Becker left the game I shed a few tears too. I guess i am an emotional kind of guy. This kind of thing really gets to me. But it's all a part of life! +++vibes+++

Re: Agassi's last stand / A Fitting Finale for Agassi
I second what everyone has said. The Baghdatis match was just amazing and I don't think it was just the cramps that did it because he moved better the last couple of games. Feel it was a combination of everything, including the occasion. In a way I now wish Andre had lost that match, when he was playing really well; also maybe Marcos would have managed to win the next round & give Rod**** more of a battle as well. Unfortunately E'Sport cut off that interview with McEnroe in the repeat, though I have the rest of the match on tape.
As for hisl ast match, great though it was when he was managing to pull off his shots, it was so obvious he was in pain that it was hard to watch him Not that he ever gave up,even though his father felt he should have withdrawn & not played. That's just not his way.
But the ovation at the end was just so emotional,I doubt there were many dry eyes (this timeI did get the interview) and apparently he had another standing ovation fromthe other players in the locker room, when he got there.
I watched his post-match interview & have printed it out - all 7 pages - and I loved the fact that 1 of the 1st things he had to do was explain to his kids"Why daddy was crying"!
It'sjust so sad when our favourites retire. Andre gets added to Borg, Becker, Edberg & Rafter in my memory bank.
THANKS FOR ALL THE PLEASURE YOU'VE GIVEN US OVER THE YEARS ANDRE.
