Maple Town?

I was wondering what the SFs fandoms feelings were about Maple Town? I know they are often said to be SFs knock offs. But I remember hearing alot more about them when I was little (born in the US in 1983) than SFs.

Are they very rare? Do they have much of a fandom of their own?

Re: Maple Town?

If it wasn't for Maple Town, you wouldn't be posting on this board right now. :3

I knew nothing of the merchandise except for one of those Coloring/Activity Books that were all the rage in those days. I had some vague recollections of the show, however, and when I got into Japanese animation and discovered that all the shows I knew and loved from Nick Jr. were Japanese in origin...I became a bit obsessed, to put it politely. ^_^;

I've cooled down nowadays, but not before accumulating all 10 Japanese VHS tapes as well as both "movies" (actually 30-minute episodes that were shown in theaters; the latter was for the sequel series Palm Town and was a slightly reedited version of the series' first episode), plus a sizable collection of production art that I've never been quite courageous enough to thumb through.

During my quest for knowledge, I discovered the Sylvanians and eventually came to recognize that, yes, Maple Town was Bandai's attempt to cash in on their popularity. Doesn't mean it didn't have a damn good TV show, something the Sylvanians didn't quite manage in their home country. And so the adventures of Patty Hope-Rabbit, Bobby Kumanoff and everybody else in Maple Town became quite near and dear to my heart...and Palm Town's Rolley is just plain priceless, if bordering on Mary Suehood. However, since Maple Town was a dead franchise (ironically, it seems Palm Town ran it into the ground), I assumed the Sylvanian Families had suffered the same fate.

Then somebody showed me a website featuring a Japanese GBA game called Wan Wan Meitantei, whose characters somewhat resembled that of an obscure PS1 game called "Tail Concerto" (great game, BTW; it's by the same people who made .hack, and if you're into Naruto, they also did the Ultimate Ninja games for PS2). What interested me most about the website, however, was that it also featured a Sylvanian Families GBA game. The fifth main-line and sixth total (out of seven). Suffice it to say, my assumption was turned completely upside-down.

Eventually I found myself trying these games, and I found them thoroughly enjoyable. Imagine Harvest Moon with no farming, or Animal Crossing without the constant betrayal...or stretching things a bit, Persona 3 without Tartarus and the Dark Hour. Now, what happened next is a fairly long story, but after a failed attempt to produce a fan translation of the first game, I eventually realized I had taken the wrong tack and made a second attempt, this time with the aid of the fine people at the Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters E-Zine forums, many of whom you will find posting here. This effort proved successful, and you can obtain the finished translation patch from the website in my signature.

Earlier this year, the admin of the original SFCCE forums decided not to renew his website subscription, and so I started the R:2 forum to save the SFCCE community. It's not quite as nice as the old SFCCE forums, but at least I matched the color scheme...and the logo I made (the pic of Aster Dandelion is from the Japanese Sylvanian Families website, BTW) is pretty nice too, IMHO.

When I was little I thought Patty Rabbit's ear necklace was the coolest thing since buttered toast emoticon
Someday I will have just her and Bobby, they were the only characters I really liked enough to remember emoticon
Are there any fansubs anywhere? I may have alot of japanese Sailor Moon musicals but I'd be lost after a while without subtitles emoticon
It makes me wish I could find a copy of the japaese verison of seaseme (sp?) street emoticon

Re: Maple Town?

I remember Maple Town characters comming out a litte after Sylvanians, I already had a sizable collection. My memory's are that I thought the baby's were really cute the reg figures were ok, but the buildings were VERY cheaply made. Maple Town was cheaper and more affordable wich is why I think the toys did so well. Sylvanian family Set of 4 was $12.99-$14.99 and the Mapletown family's were around $10 the buildings were also much cheaper as well.

Check this out. :3

http://www.sendspace.com/file/bf5hfo

This here is a little bit o' everything: Maple Town MP3s, artwork scrounged up from the four corners of the Internet, and the entire Palm Town "movie", which is actually the series' first episode with extra footage from the final two episodes of Maple Town.

I included a .txt file titled "Contents" explaining everything. Enjoy!

So, what do you think? Pretty neat, huh? ^_^

I'm hoping there's a version of DivX for Macintosh...somehow I hadn't taken that into account...

Yup, yup! emoticon It is emoticon!
Although, I like Maple Town better than Palm Town for some reason. I know Maple Town was mostly just happy happy fluff, but I liked it that way *lol*
Plam Town reminds me too much of LA or something since I live in Califorina emoticon

Of course even my idea of Sylvania is a bit..different and dark emoticon so I should not be one to talk emoticon

But it is very nicely recorded emoticon!
And of course I have DivX if I did'nt as an anime fan I would go crazy O.o emoticon [

By any chance, have you played Rule of Rose? Because that list gave me freaky visions of the "membership list" of the Red Crayon Aristocrats.

On a lighter (but still "different and dark" note ^_^), sometimes I imagine the Maple Town and Sylvanian characters outfitted with SEES armbands and Evokers. The question is, of course, what Personas would everybody get?

If I were unimaginative, I guess I could just arm everybody with existing ones...i.e. Patty would get Io/Isis, Bobby would get Polydeuces/Caesar, Diana would get Penthesilea/Artemisia, Johnny would get Hermes/Trismegistus...maybe Rolley's little brother Peter would get Nemesis/Kala-Nemi, and Alice would have Palladion/Athena...Cerberus would be a tough choice, but I think Greter might fit the bill. XD Who would get Castor, though? More importantly, who would get Orpheus/Thanatos/Messiah?
