Are the days of Cheap Sylvanians gone ?

It seems so. Gone are the days that I could buy something decent with SGD$50. Back then, I could get , a whole JP Family or even a small building like the Photo Studio or Church. Even the Beauty Saloon cost a little more at about SGD$60. I remember my dad getting for me the Post Office with Samuel Stamp for a mere USD$18 as Christmas present back when I started elemetary school.

Today, a whole JP family would set me back at almost SGD$80 and the Church ? A whooping SGD$99.95, the price that I paid for my Pink Roof Woodland Cottage back in 2002. Its a blessing in diguise I don't collect building anymore.

While there are many factor to their price hike, I still can't really justify paying that much for my Sylvanians. Its really absurb that I am paying so much for my figures. SGD$39.95 for the Blackberry Sister Boating set ? I can practicaly buy two tops for Topman with that kind of price.

So back to the topic, would anyone be interested in writing letters to the distributors ? I mean I just can't stand here doing nothing while they rise the price for everything... In the meantime however, I'll just have to resort to online means to get my figures... emoticon

I hate to say it, but that is just what happens. Prices go up. I don't think the distributors are being greedy, I think its just inflation.

I don't know about Singapore, but here in the US, our $ is really weak compared to the JP Yen. 2 years ago it was 110 Yen to the $, now its about 85 Yen to the $. That means that everything I want to buy from Japan is going to cost 25% more simply due to the different exchange rate. If the SG$ is also going down vs the Yen, then that definitely explains why something imported from Japan costs so much more right now.

Anyone in the UK that regularly buys from my list knows what I am talking about-- the UK pound has lost value to the $ over the past year as well (personally I'm loving that, everything in the UK is on sale for me!)

Overall, in the US, the cost of a family of 4 Sylvanians has not increased significantly over the past 20 years. The MSRP (manufacturers suggested retail price) back in the late 80s was $20 for a family, and now its $22. That's only a 10% inflation increase over 20 years, or less than .5% per year. That's really low, as inflation in general is about 3-4% per year (and other things like gas and health care increase much much faster than that!)

So, even though it hurts to have to pay more for items, I can't agree that the change is too much. Sorry for the long explanation, but I have a bachelors in economics, a masters of business, and I work in the financial industry, so I eat and breathe this kind of stuff all day long.

Happy collecting,

Wendy

Living in Australia, i am constantly trolling the internet for the best prices on all my SF purchases.

I agree with Wendy about exchange rates, at the moment, i am also loving the fact that some currencies are performing bettter than others. For example untill recently, all my purchases from the UK were costing me twice as much as the listed price(i.e one UK pound was costing me AU$2 at least) and now the rate is a lot more acceptable to my bank balanceemoticonEspecially our exchange rate with the US dollar is Very appealing at the moment.

What annoys me more is the difference in price at different retailers. In Australia families can range anywhere from AU$19.99 on special up to AU$39.99, while i recently saw Rose Cottage for AU$50.00 at one store, and at almost AU$90.00 at my local toy shop. The Grand Hotel sells anywhere between AU$199.95 up to an astounding AU$325.00.

I guess really that it all evens its self out in the end, sometimes you will pick up an item very cheap in your home country and other times you will pay a little extra for someting that you need to get from overseas.

Hi Wendy. Thank you for your detailed analysis. Its always nice to have someone who knows how things work in this area of the economy.

I have to admit, the inflation here has really increased threefold from about 2% to a current 6.5% ! Not to mention the weaken Pound and Yen against the Singapore dollar in the past year.

I just hope they're offering bigger discounts this season. They have offered 20% for the past five years and I am not expecting a cut.

I think prices have gone up here significantly. Back when I was a kid a family of four was £12.99 and that price stuck until 2007 with the new guinea pig and penguins, when they put them up slightly because of the new designs. I think they went up to £14.99 and now they're £15.99 to £18.99 depending on where you buy.

I think the family life/ready to play sets have probably seen the biggest price hike. Particularly the new Renard one. I've seen that retailling at £18.99 which is more than your family of four. I've started buying nearly new off ebay now, or trailing auctions. I managed to pick some babies up for just £0.99 plus postage which still works out cheaper than the average toy store emoticon
