Another photo of the Village construction progress
I have a question, Beverly. What is the actual size of your Village going to be once you have applied the plywood top (L x W)? Also, I was outside today looking at the woods that surround our house and was hit with an idea. Is there a way to make trees using real tree limbs and leaves? We have a ton of trees (umm, we live in the woods) that have tiny leaves on them that would make fantastic trees for the Village. However, the roadblock is finding a way to preserve them so they don't wither and die. I realized that I have access to natural landscaping materials which, if useable, could help cut the cost in that area. Any ideas?

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
hey Julia,
if you dry out the twigs that you like in a very low temp oven, you can then coat them with a clear lacquer to protect them. Then you spray the " branches" with adhesive and roll them in a spagnum moss or similar that is used around Florists displays. this looks very effective.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Hi Julia,
You and your questions I did a drawing of the Village, but when it was done, it had little meaning without the context of the room it's in. So, Chris and I measured the oddly shaped room and I put together the following drawing. I hope it explains a few things....
As you can see, the Village will be the focal point of the room. It will be a bit less than 6' tall so I don't bump my head while bending inside. The dimensions of the drawing are accurate within and inch or two. We don't have any plywood yet, but there will be two layers screwed together on top of the storage cabinets. Chris has some snazzy idea about why there will be two plywood layers, but I can't explain it in words so I'll do more drawings of the plans as we go along.
As for plants up here that we could use, well, it's still sort of winter but trying to be spring. We had 4" of snow yesterday, and it's snowing again today, though not as vigorously as yesterday. It's a little hard to go looking for plant materials at this time of year. Plus, we live in an urban setting without much wilderness around, which makes it even harder to plant material to use as armatures. May and June are better months for scrounging from nature. I suspect I'll have a bit of time to find natural some materials for tree making.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Teeheehee. I absolutely love the drawing Beverly. Thank-you so much for taking the time to put it together for me. It definitely has made it easier for me to imagine. The room I am going to be using isn't as large as yours, but I should be able to make it work if I plan it right. I am thinking of placing the plywood base for the Village along three walls of the room. Basically, making a "horseshoe" shaped display area leaving the center of the room open so that I will be able to move around. I really like the cabinets that you are using for the bottom of your display. They are not only great for using as storage, but also adding stability to your Village. How many cabinets did you end up having to buy and are they very expensive? Two sheets of plywood screwed together? I can't imagine the reasoning behind this, so I can't wait to see the plans for it. A sheet of plywood is thick enough by itself, unless you are using very thin plywood, then I could see putting two together. This ought to be interesting to say the least. We live in Florida, so our temps are pretty warm most of the year. Their idea of winter here is laughable. Don't get me wrong, my blood has thinned out considerably so I do actually get cold, but we go from freezing to hot all in the same week. We actually have our AC on now and the trees have already gotten all their new leaves. I wish we had snow. It is the one thing that I have missed the most since we left Virginia. Throw a snowball for me Beverly.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Julia,
Glad you like the drawing. It took me hours to get it right. This room is such a strange shape
The cabinets are from Ikea. I imagine you have Idea down there, so you could use the same ones we're using if you're so inclined. I like the light coloured wood look of these cabinets and they look really nice with our oak hardwood floor.
Here is the link to the Pax Cabinet that is very much like the ones we have. In the "Size Box" to the bottom right of the photo, choose 100x60x77/70 cm to get the right sized cabinet. The only difference between the photo and the ones we have is that ours have a base beneath each cabinet.
We have eight of them, though we had one already and it has a shelf in it. Shelves are available if you need them. I don't think I'll need any more shelves as I can easily stack everything inside the shorter cabinets. Plus, most, if not all, of my buildings will be displayed in the Village.
The two sheets of plywood will probably each be 3/8" thick or thicker. Two layers screwed together will provide stability for the 12' span of the main part as well as for the places where the "T" parts join. There's another reason for the two layers, but I can't describe it. Hopefully, I'll be able to draw it for you when we get to that point.
It warmed up after the snow fell both today and yesterday, so most of the new snow has melted. There are still piles of snow from people shovelling their driveways over the past winter in areas where the sun doesn't hit them, though. Those piles take a long time to melt.
Chris has been working on the electrical stuff in the garage this afternoon. He's almost got all the plug-ins wired. He has next week to get the garage all wired, so the week after, when he's got the whole week off, he can diligently work on framing the Village

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
if you have layers of plywood you can also cut out lakes and ponds and have depth.. someone from the old boards had something like that.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Cotton,
Thanks for the link. Those are the kinds of photos that provide inspiration I have too many buildings to spread everything out as much as are in the photos, but the landscaping is great.
Tiffany,
Good idea about cutting out pieces of plywood for water areas. I have the UK Rose of Sylvania Canal Boat as well as two JP Little Boat Sets, so I am definitely planning on having a water area and a camping area, maybe both in the same location just outside the Village proper.
We're actually close to getting the plywood, probably Saturday, maybe earlier. Once the plywood is cut to size, it'll be placed on the cabinets and I can do a few dry runs at setting up the Village. Because the Village will be encased in Plexglas, I have to figure out if there will be three or four panels on each side of the long part of the "T". Doing dry runs setting it up will give me a better idea of how many Plexi panels will suit my needs best.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village
Beverly , just wondering , will your village be cover by plexiglas ? I remember when I displayed my village without any protection. The result was huge dust lumps all over the place and spider webs in the corners . Good thing , my figures were safe !
