I think you are so right to kepp your surprise for a bit, you dont want to undermine her own expressions with them and imagine her delight when she first sees your magical world emoticon . As to my two kids their different play styles might appear to be gender related but its actually much more personality. George has grand scheemes and dose everything on a HUGE scale, he is passionate and full of plans. Kate is far less visionary and excells at detail, she loves role play and is very thorough (unless she is cleaning her room emoticon ). Togeather they make a magnificent whole and can achieve ANYTHING which is very scary from a parents perspective.

Here is a photo of their last setup taken this time last year.

Sorry I forgot to resize the photo before loading it up. Have corrected it now. emoticon

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village

Hi Beverly,

I haven't quite figured out how I want to store my figures and other items. I need to be able to do it using the least amount of space as possible. I have been considering buying different sized storage totes with lids. The downside to this is the fact that I would have to dig through the containers to find what I wanted to use. I would love to be able to separate everything like you have, but I just don't have the room or the money at this time to do it. The one thing I did do though was place each figure/family, shop, play-set, furniture set, etc. in Ziploc bags and then labeled them.

Like I said before, I am not going to keep any of my boxes other than the one's my buildings came in. I just don't see the point in it. I have no intentions of ever putting any of the smaller items back in the boxes that they came in so there really is no sense in keeping them. They are just taking up much needed space. The funny thing is I don't even know why I kept them to begin with. Go figure! emoticon

My figures far outnumber any other items that I have. I never intended for it to be this way. I figured I would buy a few families that I liked and that would be it. I laugh at my naivety now. New figures and families keep cropping up that I want and just can't keep myself from buying. Take today for example, I just purchased two Grandparent Sets I didn't own yet....the Keats Cat and the Maces Mouse. I have a fondness for the Grandparents....one that developed when I found out that I was going to be a grandmother myself. emoticon

Cataloging does take up a lot of time. Having to list every little piece that comes in a set can be tedious. However, in the long run it is well worth it. I like knowing what I have or am possibly missing in a set. It is going to be especially helpful when I start arranging my room. Some of my buildings were stored with furniture and other items in them so they are going to need to be put back with their respective sets. I wouldn't have a clue as to what went with what without my lists.

You are right that Anita is very consistent when it comes to having new and rare items. Also, she always seems to be able to find anything that I am looking for at any given time. It absolutely amazes me at how good she is with that. emoticon As I stated before, I absolutely adore her. I have every intention of continuing to buy from her and will do so for as long as I am able.

As for Samantha being introduced to my Sylvanian Families and Calico Critters, I really want it to be something very special that she and I share together. Since she is still very young and nowhere close to being old enough to play with anything, I have plenty of time to decide what I am going to do and how I am going to go about doing it. One thing that I do know for certain is that I have no intentions and never have had any intentions of giving her everything at one time. That would definitely be overkill on my part. Something I have thought about doing when the time comes is to start by reading her one of the Sylvanian Families storybooks that I have and then that night after she has gone to sleep sneak in her room and set up the figures that she met in the story. Imagine her surprise when she woke up in the morning. emoticon

It was a school holiday project, so at the end of the two weeks Mum had the task of re-allocating all the bits to their boxes and putting it all away.

Shauna,

What a lovely photo! Thank you for posting it! Let your children know that their village has been inspiring to me emoticon

Julia,

I buy inexpensive plastic containers with lids at the local Dollarama store. A quick Google tells me that Dollarama is a Canadian chain of over 600 stores headquartered in Montreal. They have a wide selection of containers that I use for furniture and play sets. I don't see why they couldn't be used to store families in baggies too. They measure 13 3/4" by 10" by 2 3/4" high. Let me know if you'd like me to ship some to you if you can't find something similar down south. They are a dollar each plus 5% GST. The small containers are eight in a package for a dollar plus 5% GST. Small plastic bags are 100 per pack for a dollar plus 5% GST. I couldn't believe my luck when I found these inexpensive storage containers. They have served me very well.

Small items of each set are put into the small containers, measuring 2 3/4" square by 1 3/4" high,
with the white (or yellow or blue) lids containers.
Flat items such as towels, clothing to into small plastic bags that are labeled for the set they belong to.
The large container is labeled on both the front and the side for easy identification.
You could label the lids of the containers so you can store them in the large tubs
so you could more easily see what's supposed to be inside.
Also in each container is a list of what's in each set so I can (relatively) easily know what goes with the set.
Image

More than one set is often put into one container.
Containers are stacked according to contents, such as all bedroom furniture sets and shopping-related sets will be stacked together.
You could store these stacked in your large tubs.
Image

In my storage set-up, the containers are then stored in the remaining cabinets below the Village.
This photo shows only a few of the containers that will be stored beneath the Village.

Beverly....quick question....what size are the stackable storage containers that you keep your figures in? Height, Width, Depth, etc.? Also, how tall is each separate "drawer" in the unit? I have found something similar online at Amazon, but don't know if they are big enough to use for my figures. The price listed is for a case which has a set of (6)five drawer units.

Julia,

That is the exact drawer unit I use. But $55 is an extreme price emoticon I bought mine for $8.00 or less. I get one family of four plus three babies in each drawer. If you have as many figures as you say, you'll spend thousands just on storage. Not a good deal!

The Beagle family in one drawer. I think I could get grandparents in that drawer if I tried.

These drawer units stack very well.

Hi Beverly,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The price that I quoted for the bins are for 6 of them together. It comes to approximately $9.16 per five drawer unit. I thought they looked like yours, but didn't want to assume that they were. I like the fact that they are black. emoticon I figured to start with that I would order 4 - 5 cases which would give me 24 - 30 five drawer units in all. How many did you have to buy? If I find that I need more I can order them later. Mandi has offered to buy them for me so I am not going to say no. After I take care of my figures I will look into getting other storage containers for my other sets. We have a Dollar Tree here which is exactly the same as your Dollarama. I didn't even think to look there for storage containers so thank-you for the idea. emoticon I am feeling so much better now that I have a solution for storing my collection and I owe you a huge thank-you for that. You don't know how much it was bothering me. The greatest thing is that it is actually affordable. emoticon

Thank-You Again Beverly!

Julia

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village

Julia,

Oh, thank goodness I got the pricing wrong! $55 for a package of six units is pretty good. A quick count gives me 38 units. Not all of them are in use, though until I put away all of the new figures, I won't know how many I have left.

Also, never underestimate the dollar store. I've picked up lots of landscaping stuff from Dollarama. The materials for most of the shrub and flower borders were purchased there. I even have the right scale white picket fences from the dollar store to use emoticon I should soon take a trip to the two that are nearby to see what I can find for my Village.

NEWS FLASH!!!! I finished cataloguing all the figures that have been hanging around since February 2008 emoticon Granted, there were probably only about 40-50 new figures, but it takes me quite awhile to do the job the way I like it done. The new pages have all been made, photos taken and added to the pages, the website updated today, and my Village room tidied up like never before emoticon I have so much more floor to walk on and appreciate!

Tonight or tomorrow I will begin the process of putting the figures in drawers. Labels for the drawers have been made, for crying out loud! Some figures will get new drawers and some will go into existing drawers. What a relief it is to be finished - um, until the box from Anita arrives this week or the next emoticon Unless I count incorrectly there will be 38 new figures, many of them families (thank goodness), in the box. Families always make the cataloguing process that much easier emoticon
