Beverly,

You really are doing a spectacularly detailed and thorough job on the Village, but, after seeing all the work that you put in to your aquarium set ups that you also used to do, i can hardly say that i am surprised. I cant even keep goldfish alive so needless to say your elaborate setups were more than amazing to me.emoticon
It is early Spring here in Australia, and of course that always brings spring cleaning time for me. This year i have sorted out all of my cupboards and storage drawers, in cluding all the little bits and pieces collected (over the years of collecting Sylvanians) that are set aside for my village. Hopefully this weekend i will be able to find time to get to the hardware store and purchase some trestle tables so that i can finally begin work on my own Village. I have a setup of my village in my Craft Loft at home at the moment, but having it set up on the floor is rather impractical as it gives my almost-4-year-old son far to easy an access to "mummy's special toys".
Cant wait to start posting photos of my project soon, and also eagerly anticipating your next installment emoticon

Charissa

Oh, Charissa! Your news of building a Village is great emoticon Please start a thread where we can all follow your progress. Start the thread with the tables you bring home. I'm so looking forward to seeing your great ideas!

I've been experimenting with a couple of ways of constructing a stone fence.
Here is a test photo of the first technique which sets the large stones with silicone
to the 1/4" wood base then filling the micro spaces the tiny stones.
It looks okay to me.
The second technique uses the same materials, but the tiny stones are set at the time of the larger stones.
This technique is messy and more time consuming and I'll probably use the first technique for any stone fences I make for the Village.

I also changed the colour of the grass.
While it's definitely non-reflective, but the shade of green doesn't quite work in this photo.
The green looks better in person. Don't know what I'll do about it emoticon

Your Village is going to be amazing! I can't believe all the hard work you have put into it. I love the trees and the stone fence looks wonderful.

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village

Hi BerryMuffin and Aloraal,

I've been working on the stone fence for a couple of days, off and on. It's really labour intensive. I don't think I'm going to be making as many as I originally thought. There are so many basic things I want to get done that going the extra ten miles on the stone fences will set me back quite awhile. I may make more of them once the Village is complete and store them. If that's the case, they will not be fixed in place and I can use them in all kinds of scenes. But we shall see. I really want to finish the Village and move onto other projects.

Today we ordered the Plexiglas panels to enclose the Village. This is such fabulous news! Once we get the holes drilled so the panels will fit tightly against the supports, the Village will be protected against dust. The panels will have handles on them so they can be easily removed which will allow me to work inside the Village whenever I want to, but have it closed up and protected when not in use. I expect to have the panels in a day or two emoticon

I found a place on eBay that sells the white picket fences and bought a whole whack of them. There are still some left for anybody who is interested....

Just a quick photo to show you all that the Plexiglas has been installed. It took a full day to do, but it's all but complete. There is a bit of hardware that needs to be added to fully secure the panels, but other than that, the big job is done emoticon

This marks a huge milestone for the Village. I started a blog on my website on March 25, 2008 and stated that my Village would be enclosed by Plexiglas. And it finally is!!!!!

The next milestone is to complete the all the painting so I can finally wash the hardwood floor to remove all those tiny spots of paint that have accumulated over the past year and a half.

Well, I'm wiped from all the work that has been accomplished over the past week. Tomorrow might be a do nothing day so I can catch up on my rest, though I am secretly dying to keep working on adding foliage to the background.

Charissa,

I'm looking forward to your new thread on your Village emoticon Please keep us posted!

Julia,

If you are still reading this forum, please post with an update on your Village room.

Good night, all emoticon

Re: Making a Sylvanian Village

I have an awful feeling that I have just come down with the H1N1 virus emoticon I've been sick with a cold for the past two weeks and have all but recovered from it. Last night, however, I started feeling sick again - and I couldn't have another cold because I'd have built up antibodies to it and would be safe. So far, I've got aching muscles and am a little disoriented - which is not how I felt at all with the cold.

Frankly, I'm a bit scared after reading so much about this virus in the newspaper. The vaccine will be available in Canada for the first time tomorrow, but that's not going to do me any good if I am already sick.

I've suspended work on the Village and put the Plexiglas up to keep the dust out for the duration of my illness. I'd also just begun work on the videos for the online AU store, but won't be able to continue work on it until I'm feeling better. Hopefully, the virus will run its course quickly and I'll be back on my feet in no time. For community safety, I am quarantining myself until I'm well again.

I hope all of you are well and continue to stay that way emoticon
