Taking the GM Out of the Equation
There is a lot of talk among designers who are working on 3.x and looking toward the future regarding "taking the GM out of the equation" and going more to the "everyone at the table are equals" style a la miniatures games.
Everyone has equal access to the clearly written rules, so no arbitrator is necessary. Players could alternate narrative, or assign a narrator. Nothing is arbitrary or based on role... it is roll... skill checks, etc. Closer to CRPG's than traditional table-tops.
I think this will kill the game (as we know it). Any opinions?

It's dead, Jim.
That would be my pronouncement. If no one designs the stories (or if there are no stories), then what are we left with? Pre-digested modules you buy and read together, rolling dice where necessary? A computerized DM with DL-ed modules?
No thanks.

Well, a great deal of discussion I have seen regards the use of the computer at the gaming table and how the game is getting to the point that use of it is strongly encouraged. I think since a number of people are designing adventures using various software to do literally all of the work in advance and just plugging the laptop in at the table, using it as the GM's screen, the miniatures battlemat (via a projector), the maps, etc., this is closer to reality than many think.
It may be a game, but it is not the one that I know. Also, with the D&D MMORPG coming out soon, maybe the whole focus of the game is about to leave the table-top and become an MMORPG, combining table-top play, MMORPG and CRPG design, a la Neverwinter Nights adventure design software.
