Adversarial or Cooperative Gaming Style?
What do you enjoy better, an adversarial style game (players vs. DM) where the goal is "to win", ie. get the most treasure/items, kill the biggest baddest NOC/creature the DM can throw at you, have the best stats, get the best feat/PrC progression possible, "my PC is the star of the show", etc.; or a cooperative style game, where the players work with the DM to create the best possible atmosphere and most satisfying story/plot and game possible for everyone at the table (no character is the star, all work together)?
Please discuss (if anybody is reading here).

Re: Adversarial or Cooperative Gaming Style?
Definitely cooperative.
It is the working together to create something larger than the self drive in me that makes me answer so. Everyone likes (or should, if they're not psychologically damamged in some way) that feeling, and Gaming can be a good way to fulfill that drive.
Now do not get me wrong. You know I'm egotistical enough to crave being the centre of attention, and love phat lewtz, but I look at gaming as cooperative storytelling. If the story is not there, then what purpose is served by the loot?
For example, I can log off right now, and go draw up a level 20 Paladin. I can give him everything cool in the game. So what? It would be meaningless. Earning it, however, would give it worth. And to me, that earning must be a cooperative venture. The DM is not an enemy, but rather a co-conspirator (who can objectively watch you die when warranted, admittedly).

Re: Adversarial or Cooperative Gaming Style?
I wanted to wait to say what I think, but I'll bite. I think there must be a balance, but there has to be cooperation and trust, though some competition is necessary.
What I am saying is, if I have everything in the game at my disposal as DM, I could just throw an ECL WAY TOO HIGH at the party and kill them off, so the deck is stacked in my favor, however, for the game, I cannot do that. I MUST, however, not take away all challenge from the game. So, it is a cooperative competition.
