What rules would you keep, change, or import from old editions?

Bound to be unpopular, but here are a couple:

1st Edition:
-Plane/Probabilty travel by Druids.
-weapon adj. vs. specific types of armour (hey, it worked! Complicated, but it worked.)
-weapon speeds. (I liked 'em, I did.)

2nd Edition:
-points for Rogues/Bards (buying roguish skills let you individualize a character, and kept some high stat fighter/wizard from being better at your roguish skills than you were!)
-individualizing PC Races. Being able to personalize your elf/human, etc. by buying specific abilities, etc. was nice, as was being able to take the "standard" racial package. It allowed characters another way to be unique.

Here is what I would do:

I would keep 3.x AC and BAB, etc.
I would ditch AoO's.
Make combat easier and less like a miniatures wargame.
I would use segmented initiative.
I would ditch fire and forget spells and go with a workable point/mana system.
Find some way to simplify stat blocks.
Make the illos look like real armor, etc. and not steam-punk spiky suits.
Find a way to make entry into the hobby more affordable.

I will have more soon.

If you remind me sometime in the future, I can show you a mana/point system I have been working on for a while. It first came around when I started DMing, but I believe I got the majority of the bugs and flaws out of it.

mana systems are pretty much flawed, they either allow for very little spell casting, or a ridiculous amount of blasting. a mana system does not make sense unless you should be able to regenerate the mana during the day. the mana system in general does not work nearly as well as the charted system. basically, with a mana system, once i get to the higher end, i may as well just throw 150 magic missiles that cant be resisted and cant miss instead of throwing one or two high end powerful spells that have the potential to either be fully resisted, partially saved or even fully saved against. it seems much more practical to only use the magic missile at that point, just maximize it and get a surefire 25pts of damage, maybe even quicken it and do 50 in one round.

Oh, I definitely agree that any mana system that has thus far been concieved is far too flawed to use. That is why I went back to fire and forget.

Also the reason for my wording:

quote:

workable point/mana system

I realize that such does not exist at the moment, but I think there could be one that works that has not been thought of yet.

Hey, Cameron, as our resident 2E expert, wasn't there a "spell slot" system in 2E? Maybe that could be melded with a mana system to create something more balanced.

Not that I recall, Darren. but it has been awhile.

A hybrid would certainly be possible however, wherein you have a certain number of spell slots (6 level 0, 4 level 1, 2 level 1, for example) and then you can select which spell to cast at the time of casting.

To make this different than the sorceror, you would need to convert the slto to mana pts., and then revise metamagic feats, etc.

for example, if you have 4 spell pts. for your 4 first level spells, then casting 1 is 1 spell pt. Casting one with a metamagic feat which makes it 2 levels higher would then simply be 3pts.: 1 for the spell, and 2 for the additional spell "levels".

Does that make any sense?

Doesn't seem very useful however. Kind of like reinventing the wheel, but making it square.

and wobbly, with some squeakiness...

but somehow, there is a better magic system out there.

True enough.

How about we make it a Board Project? Kick around idea on here, critique them mercilessly, and see what we can come up with?
