First Placement

Well i just got the results of all my coursework. I passed woohoo. I passed 6/8 stations for the OSCES having failed injection prep duh and urinalysis which i was expecting anyway just glad i passed the rest. I got 90% for my numeracy, 75% for my essay and 84% for my learning log so i am well chuffed with myself emoticon emoticon

So onto the not so good. i started placement yesterday in an acute stroke ward i was nervous and excited but i shouldnt have bothered being excited that is. It seems that the life and fun of nursing is all but sucked out of the staff nurses that work there. My mentor seems nice enough but was only really interested in dumping me with CSW's which was ok in the end cause i learnt alot. I did my first bed bath which is what i was worried about the most and in the end it wasnt so bad. I also made loads of beds - again it was fine cause i think to be a good nurse you need to know how to do everything including making beds lol. My mentor then suggested i go down to day surgery with a patient to see how PEG tubes get inserted - WOW wasnt ready for that would have been extra great if i didnt think she was trying to get rid of me emoticon HOwever, the operation was cool. Got to see the scope go all through the oesphagus and then into the stomach it was so interesting thought i might pass out when doctor put scalpel in but i managed to hold it together emoticon just lol.The whole procedure took 15 mins but i was down there for 2 hrs - hence the get rid of me feeling. I also did alot of obs which was good because we only did them manually in the clinical skills lab so now i know how to do it with the machine which was cool. I did feel my confidence increasing as the day went on but not really because of my mentor just because i was feeling a bit more comfortable. She did ask me how i felt after my first day so that was nice. My biggest problem is that she didnt even look at my portfolio we havent chosen the skills i have to work on or discussed what needs to be done and i dont think it will happen anytime soon even though it says in big bold letters MUST DO WITHIN 48HRS. My co-mentor is in tomorrow so hopefully he will look through it with me. I actually had to badger my mentor yesterday just to sort out off duty. Maybe it was just a busy shift although it seemed very quiet in the pm. Im doing a long day tomorrow and thursday god help me. Its not just the hours but it means i wont see the wee one till friday so i feel sooooo guilty about that. Here is hoping the rest of the week isnt as bad as yesterday. Although compared with other people i spoke to today my placement is a walk in the park lol.

Re: First Placement

well done on your excellent marks.... will you have to resit your osces? we only did 1 osce in 1st yr so they have changed the programme since i was there (mind you it was nearly 5 years ago lol)

how is your placement going now? was you associate mentor any better? hope you got all your paperwork started.... you must be almost half way through your placement now.

Re: First Placement

Keep up the good work.

Do you feel under more pressure doing the shortened course to cram in more work compared to others doing the full length one?

You've made a great start.
