My Insight Placement & another update.

Hello everyone emoticon

Ive just completed my first 2 week insight into Learning Disability nursing placement and have found that it is definatly not for me at all.

I went to a "supported living home", the daily routine was:
0700: Start work
0700-0800: Cups of tea around the dining room - bored out my brain.
0800-0915: Get residents up (6 residents in total, 3 plus me support workers, near enough one each). Washed, dressed & breakfast.
0915: Take most of them to day care centre.
1000: Onwards.. back at the house, if any are left at the house it is the ones who cannot do anything and are confined to the wheelchairs all day. Nothing was done to entertain them but the tele, expect on one occasion of which we took them to the local park for a picnic for a couple of hours.

When we came back from dropping off at the different day care centres, there was house work to be done (I often found myself hoovering..) and food shopping. The rest of the time was sat around at the dining room table.

I have never been so bored in all my life.

I dont think I got much out of this placement at all, the only thing that was good to learn was how to behave around those with Learning Disabilities. I also did my first enema.. nice. Thats literally all I did. I must have spent 80% of the placement sat at that dining room table watching day time tv... There were no opportunities for me to do anything what so ever. Awful. Thank goodness I was only there for 2 weeks.

My normal placement, I havent been there for the past 6 weeks or so, Im going back on Tuesday. I am only there for 2 more weeks and then we have another 6 weeks Uni and then off to 2nd placement. I cant remember if I have mentioned it before, but I am going to a Surgical Ward which I am quite looking forward to as I have been doing alot of shifts on the bank on surgical wards & really enjoy them.

Apart from that with placement, I have had alot going on. We have got to do a 15 minute presentation when I go back to Uni. I have so far got only the first 2 slides.. Not good. Ive written myself a plan out and stuck it to the wall next to my computer, but I find myself distracted everytime! (I should really be using this opportunity to get on with it).
Alot of people on my course are feeling the same. I think its just all starting to hit us and the course seems to be stepping it up slowly... Just seems as there is so much work to do and so little time. If im not at uni or on placement I am working on bank or sat at the computer..! Ok I may have a pants social life right now, but I just keep thinking of the end, when I am finally a Staff Nurse and I award myself with a new Tigra emoticon Which i totally plan to do as my existing car finance finishes in my 3rd year. Woohoo!! Lol.

Anyway off now, bye : ) x
