posticon Horrendous day at work...

Ive just came in from the worst shift of my career so far.

We have a 1 yr old girl in who basically isnt gonna make it. She has a neurological disorder and her sister died from the same condition. She came in to us last night after aspirating (some feed went into her lungs) and her oxygen saturations were 35%!

Today things just went downhill...we couldnt get IV access and had to insert a central line to give her fluids...over the course of the day we have slowly been losing her, saturations are now 79-84% in 15L O2. Its awful watching her esp as shes not for resus. I cant stop thinking about her and her poor family who are holding up really well.

Its hard knowing what shes going thru and then going and having to look after patients who really dont have that much wrong with them and you really wanna say stop ****ing moaning and look at that poor girl in there.

Just needed to get my thoughts down on something there.

Awwww... that is terrible. Poor wee wean. emoticon I dunno if I could handle kids dying, my hat goes off to you Nikki and your colleagues..emoticonemoticonemoticonemoticon

We are told in uni, that we should keep a personal detachment from out patients, but in reality it doesn't happen. I have on a few occassions phoned up wards to see how patients are.. especially if I am only there for the day.

It must be so hard Nikki and like Paul said i also take my hat off to you and your colleagues. I certainly could not cope with kids dying and i certainly hope the little one has a peaceful ending. It must be so so hard and it is bound to play on your mind your only human after all.

Keep us updated hun xx emoticon

Re: Horrendous day at work...

Totally makes me laugh when the uni's tell you not to get attached, its virtually impossible.

I only met this wee girl when she came in but have heard about her sister and family from other staff.

Its a hard job sometimes.

it is hard nikki but sometimes those hard times are what makes you know your doing a worthwhile job.... that you were glad to be there and honoured to be part of this family's life if only for a little while.

Re: Horrendous day at work...

Well found out today that she died on the Monday, the day after I was looking after her and no-one phoned me to tell me. Its common place in our ward to be phoned. Just about sums the place up!
