New job...new career

well i started my new job on monday, its in a childrens inpatient psychatric ward.

Its totally different to anything that I have ever done before and its making me feel so weird.

This week so far I have been supernumery and have been told to observe staff and kids but some staff are better at letting me do things than others. There is no actual 'nursing' involved and this is a shock to the system. my days have been spent intereacting with the kids such as painting with them and basically playing with them and supervising them at lunch. i dont mind doing all this but at times this week I have felt like I have been treated like an auxillary. I feel that I have got so much to learn that I should be getting showed staff nurse things (god i sound like a right ***** here to auxillarys). The plan is eventually I should be doing 1-1 sessions with the kids, but I dont know what these involve and stuff.

So all in all this has been a mixed week, i am missing my old ward (god cant belive i am saying this) and missing traditional nursing things but I am looking forward to feeling less like a spare part lol.

Nikki - not sure I know what you mean by no actual nursing being involved?
I think its only natural that you feel like this, like a spare part after all its a completely new area. What are the Q nurses doing if you feel you are acting more like a HCA?
Maybe they are just giving you time to settle before involving you in the one to one sessions or even discussing them with you ?

Keep us posted x

Re: New job...new career

i think MH is a lot different to general nursing whether its adults or children.

but im sure taht by spending time painting and being with the children is much more important and therapeutic to them than doing 'nursey' stuff.

idid you do an MH placement during your training nik? maybe sarah can give you a few pointers on the MH front too.

good luck hope it all comes together for you hun. emoticon

good luck with your mew post and i am sure you will feel more into it all soon ,starting any new job is strange to everyone at you first,i am sure though that you will settle into it soon,as previously said mental health nursing is different to the nursing you are used to doing, but it it still a very important form of nursing nonethe less emoticon

Re: New job...new career

Lulu..I didnt have a mental health placement so maybe thats why everything is totally new and different.

I have now finished my first week and im hoping that things will improve in the next few weeks.

This is clearly one area that was lacking in my training totally, I think that child mental health should be incorporated into both the child and mental health branches.

Re: New job...new career

well this is the end of my second week and the end of me being supernumery.
I have felt much better this week, I still feel that some nurses dont include me that much but I am getting on with things and getting to know the kids.

One of the nurses phoned me from my last job the other night and just hearing what was happening down there makes me so glad that I have left.

I have gotten some forms to join the nurse bank for extra cash and to also keep my nose in with the medical/surgical side of paediatrics, as I certainly dont want to lose skills that I have gained over the past year.

In a few weeks I have CALM training, I cant remember what the letters stand for but it is a 3 day course that teaches you how to hold and restrain children. I am feeling a bit apprehensive about this as once I have done this training I will be fully involved in the ward as restraint is a big part of the ward routine.

Thanks for reading emoticon
