Back to labour ward

well started back on labour ward on monday and looked after a woman for the whole shift who was in early labour and not quite ready to have her baby yet emoticon. altyhough when i went back on thursday one of my friends was looking after her and she had a wee boy emoticon.

my mentor and i looked after a lovely couple but they ended up having a forceps delivery emoticon.

it was so nice though and they were so thrilled to bits with their baby daughter even though it was an instrumental delivery emoticon... but mum wasnt very well afterwards and ended up in theatre having a wee op as not all the placenta had come away and she had a bit of a bleed emoticon.

i popped up on the postnatal ward today and saw them and although mum was tired she was beaming from ear to ear and dad looked like the bees knees emoticon. its really nice to be involved even if things dont go to plan but that the end result is what counts.... i think they will make a great mum and dad emoticon

today when i arrived there were 3 ladies all in labour and fairly well dilated and one was getting ready to push... so me and my mentor when to look after her emoticon.... mum was fantastic.... no analgesia and coping fantastically on all fours, she was starting to feel a bit pushy so wanted to sit up... we hardly had time to introduce ourselves or get to know mum and dad very well.... and i felt really self concious and unsure of myself emoticon... when somebody is in that stage of labour its not really the time to make idle chit chat getting to know you conversations emoticon

i also hadnt worked with that midwife before and wasnt sure what she wanted me to do and she didnt know how much i knew either :holy:. when we started to see baby's head at the peak of the contraction i went to wash my hands and get my gloves on... only baby wasnt for stopping and i delivered his head with one and 1/2 gloves on emoticon next push and he was out with a very proud mum and dad emoticon.

it was really great to be involved... even though i was bit out of practice and unsure of myself as it had been a while since my last delivery. but hopefully i will get a few more deliveries like that over the next 3 weeks and get a bit more confident emoticon.

although i didnt know mum and dad very well before delivery we made up for that afterwards as mum had to get a few stitches (not by me). but helped her put baby to the breast afterwards and they were so happy it was really nice being part of it /\o/\

Re: Back to labour ward

on monday went on and there was only one lady on labourward... my mentor had already gone in to care for her, which was cool cos there was another student on duty... so i was really pleased my mentor had gone in emoticon.

when i went into the room the lady was having a contraction so i just stood quietly emoticon till it was over and then introduced myself to her and her hubbie.

she said she didnt really care who i was emoticon cos she was too busy trying to cope with the pain... she felt a wee bit disapponted with herself for having morphine as she had really wanted a natural delivery, but i reassured her she was doing really well, which she was emoticon.

my mentor said she noticed the woman was starting to get a bit pushy but i couldnt see it at first emoticon, and felt a bit useless emoticon, but after a few more contractions i started to see what she meant emoticon. she was due for an internal and this indicated that she was fully dilated and hospital policy is to leave her for an hour and push if she wants to.

i tried to familiarise myself with the paperwork again as it had been a while since id actually completed any of it emoticon. during that hour we reassured mum... and dad. and talked about what happens next, which was active pushing.

my mentor told the woman just to concentrate on my voive and that i would be telling her exactly what to do and that id tell her when to push and then when to stop and pant.... i got really nervous when she said this cos i started to worry that i wouldnt know when she was to pant emoticon.

however this lady was a natural emoticon she was pushing really well and when we started to see the head i got my gloves on so i was prepared this time emoticon.

the head was really advancing well, but then over 2 contractions seemed to stop emoticon and we called in another midwife however just as she walked in the woman did a really big push and things started moving again emoticon....

the head seemed to go on for ever though but she pushed really well and when she got to the panting stage she coped so well emoticon, she didnt even pant she just listened to my voice and did tiny wee pushes till the head was right out and what a head...

on the next contraction tried to deliver the shoulders but they appeared a bit stuck emoticon but mum pulled her legs back and gave a big push and out came the whole baby girl emoticon, although she was a wee bitty flat and took a few seconds to take her first breath.

muym and dad were so proud emoticon and i felt great cos mum had really helped me by being so focused.

the placenta got stuck though and took a bit of shoogling to be delivered but it eventually appeared. mum had no external lacerations even though her baby was over 10lbs emoticon but unfortunately had a few internal tears that needed suturing.

as labour ward was so quiet the family stayed with us which was really nice as although i didnt know them so well i really got to know them well afterwards.

mum went on to breastfeed her daughter and both were pure stars emoticon emoticon emoticon

it was an excellent shift and i felt like i was actually getting it emoticon
