GUTTED!!!!!

i feel as sick as a dog and that uni have really kicked me in the stomach! after my weekend away i have returned to find that the elective placements have been issued, they are sending me to 'general' theatres for the solid 12 weeks emoticon

i was really hoping for some gynae experience but obviously the area in which i wish to work when i qualify counts for nothing! emoticon

other people have got what they wanted and i know that it is impossible for them to please all students but they havent given me anything near it! im dreading at already emoticon

some people have been placed there who have no desire to work in that area, so i feel really anxious. i am planning to arrange a visit day perhaps next week and meet with a senior staff member at the theatres. hopefully i will be given some choice as to which different types of surgery's i see, but the only problem is that gynae theatre is in a totally different building so i'm unlikely to get to go there. but i will ask all the same. uni have also made it clear that these will NOT be changed under any circumstances .
im also worried about getting a job when i qualify, how will i get my face known if im not working in the area i love???

sorry to go on but its just depressed me! emoticon

That must be so frustrating. I'm sorry I haven't got anything to suggest but I can understand how you feel. Does make you wonder how they allocate these placements.

awww Suzie thats so unfair emoticon

they havent just stated general theatres and then farm you all out to your specific theatre on your first day??

i know when we did theatres 8 of us were allocated general theatre....1 guy then had to go to another hospital to the eye theatre, 1 got gynae, 1 got vascular, 1 day surgery, cardiothoracic, 1 GI surgery and 3 orthopaedics.

perhaps the theatre staff will be more acommodating than the allocations office. emoticon

hello everyone,
sorry its been a day or two since ive been on! i think they will do what you said lulu and shift me around, i would hate to be stuck in a theatre id didnt like for a solid 12 weeks! emoticon

my friend spent 4 weeks there with some others and they were just allocated a theatre each for the duration. im hoping that they will be more accomadating for me seeing as im there for a solid 12! ive just called uni and spoke to a very nice lady in the allcations dept, before i did that i checked how many students were placed in gynae theatre and if at all there was any free weeks, there was so armed with this knowledge i told her and she has given me the number of my practice placement facilitator, who apparantly is in charge of womens healh, so im currently just ringing his office to try to get hold of him, il let you all know of any changes, fingers, toes and eyes crossed for this one please lol emoticon

im keeping my fingers and toes tightly for you too suzie. its such a shame when you have a real passion for an area and somebody who just kinda thought it would be cool gets it instead.... ITS NOT FAIR!!!! emoticon

tell them i said they have to give you a gynae place cos its great or ill send my dad round and hes a policeman. emoticon

lol @ lulu! well i tried every 5 minutes yesterday to get hold of that man, with no luck, so i tried again today and got hold of him!i explained everything to him, and not only has he given me 4 weeks in gynae theatre but a block of 8 weeks! im over the moon about it really am! cant wailt for the summer hols to be over now! thanks for all yur crossed limbs as it obviously worked! and of course the threat of lulu's dad coming round lol emoticon

i inly got to change though cos some weird person didnt want it! lol emoticon

Suzie that is fantastic im sure you will find it really good.... especially anaesthetic room and recovery as they have more patient contact.

gynae patients can have really extreme reactions to their surgery and some of it is heart breaking too... like evacuations following miscarriage emoticon

but also very very rewarding being privaledged to help them through this traumatic time.
