first third year placement! AARRGGHH!!!

i start my 1st 3rd year placement on monday and im feeling very nervous to say the least! im worried that they will expect something that i yet dont have the confidence or knowlwdge to do and il look silly. i wouldnt do any procedure without fully knowing what im doing or anything im just afraid i wont meet up to 3rd year standards! can any body who has been here give me a few pointers on what im to expect and what they might expect from me?? thanks for reading bye suzie x

there are no 3rd year standards everybody is different and you will know a lot more than you think you do.

its always the same with new placements hey. but once you started and get to know the routine and where everything is you will be fine.

i have every confidence in you suzie emoticon

yep suzie just take it each day at a time and dont be afraid to say if you dont know something rather than thinking I should know that as Im a third year.

Im sure you will do fine, whereabouts are you going? emoticon

hello! just thought id stop in a give a quick up date on how the placemnts going, ive only done three shifts since monday as two were days off and im working the weekend (early and a late emoticon

), so far the staff have been really nice, one of the sisters is a bit scarey but you get that evry where dont you?! and yes to my surprise ive really enjoyed it, feel im getting back in to the swing of things, ive done drug rounds which just seems to have boosted my confidence levels, this was a problem on my previous placement as they didnt seem to want us to do the rounds! any way, ive been administering iv fluids and injections (which i hate!) and the patient was really nice and said that she didnt feel a thing which again made me feel great! lol they are being gentle with us this week but next week we are getting our own bay of six to run, a prospect im excited about but also nervous but thats why im a student cos i need to learn! lol its actually a mixed bag kind of ward, it supposed to be gastro -? i acute medical ward but we just seem to have everything!, old dears that need TLC, overdoses, cardiac problems even a man today with severe chickennpox. any way i cant keep gabbing here all night cos you will be falling asleep, bye suzie x emoticon

Suzie your ward sounds brilliant, just get stuck in there with having your own bay, I was petrified at first but it feels great and Im sure you will do fine.

aww thanks nikki, im just gonna grab the bull by the horns, if i dont get it perfect the first time il try even harder the next and hopefully come off this placement feeling like i actually am a third year student nurse! your encouragement and support really does help,wish you were my mentor! emoticon

well im two weeks in to the placement now and im so tired, just finished a late shift, and an 8 day stretch, so im pleased to be off tomorrow thats for sure! im still enjoying the placemnt and learning more and doing on each shift that goes by, even if its just filling in a form to inform resthomes of patients condition on discharge! weve all got to learn these things and im not so familiar with he social side of things but hopefully am gonna get chance to do that there. so fingers crossed for me that il like the remaining 6 weeks left! bye suzie x emoticon

Im so glad that your enjoying your placement susie, how did you get on with handling your own bay?
I used to love it when I was handing over that I had completed a days staff nurse work and used to feel chuffed with myself lol xx emoticon
