posticon my first ever cardiac arresy

whata shift! i was in a sideroom just about to take a mans bp when i heard the emergency buzzer sound, for second i though 'somebodys knocked it' but then when it didnt stop me all the staff went running towards a bay of ladies, this litle old lady had gone off and wasnt breathing, somebody grabbed the resus trolley and it all happend in a whir, doctors came, anaesthetists came, there was such a big crowd of people there in about twom minutes flat! as it happens the docyors were coming to the ward to make this lady DNR but the nurse in chareg had to put the call out because it was not ordered and she was still for resus, they put the oxygen bag and pump thing over hermouth but didnt start CPR as they were just about to put her for DNR, i just felt so sorry for her, she was 97 bless her and thats a very good age, and her codition was deteriorating increasingly over the past few days, i just felt sad.
its a shame folk have to die in order for us to see experiences, but maybe next time i will have more of an idea what to do, the auxiliareis were fab and i told them so, they knew exactly what they shoud have been doing and they just did it, by the time i was there people were already moving the heqadrest and makiong her flat in the bed, so hopefully next time i wont be in a daze mode emoticon god rest her soul, i feel guilty for writtng about the experience emoticon

Re: my first ever cardiac arrest

its soemthing that will stay with you Suzie

i still remember the first one i witnessed in in 1988 again on somebody who was about to be made NFR as it was then. i was really emotional afterwards but felt really sorry for the poor guy who went off on the cammode.

he was in his 80s and riddled with cancer ended up with fractured ribs froma sternal thump before he died about 2 hours later now not for resus with his family with him.

i had been on duty when another arrest happened before that but i didnt actually see anything.

however the witch of a staff nurse made me phone up the womans non-english speaking husband to come in and see his wife urgently while she lay dead behind the curtains and i had only been on placement for a few shifts and it was a really horrible experience. emoticon

Re: my first ever cardiac arresy

hi suzie hope your feeling a little better now. I still remember people from A&E who arrested and will remember always which in a way is a nice thing cos it shows u had respect for them and im sure they would be pleased to know that we will always remember them, obviously we would like to remember them for different reasons but it shows how much u care when u remember particular things. I dont think i will ever learn not to upset over things lol.
