placement

Well, i've finished my second day of placement and i feel a bit flat to be honest.

I felt lost yesterday, i even panicked when they asked me to give out coffee! I got to see an ultrasound and a spiral CT scan yesterday tho. Today i've washed, fed and made beds all day. I've been working with an auxillary all day (and she's great).

I met a friend today and she's been spending all day with the nurses and has given injections and helped and drug rounds and stuff.... i felt a bit jealous to be honest.

I've not met my mentor yet cos she's on nights. The staff are really nice, and they have been short staffed today.

There are not actually any problems with my placement, so i don't know why i feel so flat! I really didn't want to go in this morning either.... Guess it's just an adjustment period.

Re: placement

sorry your feeling a bit peed off... but you sound like you had quite a productive day... dont compare yourself to others... just look at what you achieve day by day.

if you do all the exiting stuff in the first week it might just go down hill from there.

when you work with your mentor you might get more opportunities or when your next on duty ask the nurse in charge if you can go on the drug round or have a look in the diary and see if anyybody is doing anything interesting like going to Xray or something and ask to go with them.

im sure it will get better when you are actaully working with your mentor and you can tell her what sort of things you want to achieve on this placement.

Re: placement

I agree with Lulu and also you seemed to have met a nice member of staff and that is always helpfull. You have time when you are with your mentor to do the drug rounds and other things maybe goig to theatre and following a patient from admission to discharge, I found this helpfull in my second year to no what happens with other depts. When is your mentor back???, if its going to be a long time ask if you can attach yourslf to a nice starr nurse and she will show you all the things you want to learn and do. Good luck. its early days yet. emoticon

Re: placement

Thanks guys.

I did know all that, and have been giving myself a good talking too every morning for being silly. emoticon

Today was better. I'm starting to know the patients and the ward round now. Plus the qualified staff weren't so busy so got to spend a little time with them emoticon

The HCA's are great, and really have shown me the ropes. I'd have been completely lost without them!

I'm exhausted tho, and i've only done 3 days. Hate to think what i'll be like when i've done a full week next week! lol
