Placement Update 1

Well i'm enjoying my placement loads more now. I'm learning loads and loads and the staff are lovely.

I can't believe how much i've learnt already.

On a sadder note, we had a lady die today and i did last offices with my mentor. emoticon It was sad, but i didn't find it as hard as i thought i would. I found it harder to see her suffering in the days leading up to her death as she was very distressed at times. I think i'm going to do a reflection on it for one of my assignments...

Re: Placement Update 1

Well, my placement is going ok. I should be able to get my competencies signed off.

I'm not really enjoying it tho. I really don't think that elderly care is for me. I love interacting with the patients and the communication etc but the rest i'm not too keen on.

The best outlook most of the patients have is a few more months in 24 hour care (if they even make it off the ward). While i know some people find it very rewarding to look after people in this stage of their lives, i find it extremely difficult and depressing.

Ah well, at least i'll be getting my competencies.

I'm sorry to hear you're not enjoying your placement as much as you would like to. I think that different placements can be important in helping us decide where we don't want to work as much as where we do. I worked as a home carer for a while and I too found it very depressing despite loving the people so I can fully sympathise with how you feel. Hope you enjoy your next placement more!

Re: Placement Update 1

Sammy,

Hope you dont let the placement get you down too much. Your next placements will be different and even if (and if its your base placement i think you do) go back then it'll be different again...speaking from personal experience.

Sorry to hear about your experience of death and last offices - you should definitly do a reflection on it, but again...speaking from experience, this is so difficult. I have a write up of a similar occurence during my last placement but im finding it hard to reflect on at the moment. Don't know if its too soon or just plain difficult - i have written loads of reflections but writing one about the death of a child is hard for me. The expereince was very valuable and in many ways positive and heartwarming. I think actually im putting off doing the reflection because i want to do it justice - it's not just a 'piece of work' to get signed off, it was someones child, a family that will never be the same again.

Ah Sammy, sorry ive rambled on and on. Good luck with your next placements.

Re: Placement Update 1

I know what you mean about wanting to do it justice. I'm sure you will. It must be so hard to see a child die. It's one thing seeing an old lady, but to see a child die must be so difficult.

Well, i'm still fed up with placement. Spent another day being a HCA. Every time i approach the nurses they say go help the HCA's. I don't mind mucking in etc but i feel as tho i've learnt nothing for ages!

And to top it off my friend has just told me that she dropping out emoticon Not only will i miss her, but we were working on something together so it's left me in the lurch a little too. Oh well, i'm going to go and soak in the bath and try and forget about it for now.

Re: Placement Update 1

Im sorry that it's not going well for you...if its any consolation i hated my first placement and thought id made a huge mistake. When i returned there in my secind year it was miles better..so different.

Sorry your pal is leaving, that must be tough..especially with the group work. Never mind youve not got much longer left have you? I've only got about 3 'proper' lectures left for my 2nd year...how scary is that..rest of year is placemnts and exam week. emoticon

Re: Placement Update 1

Thanks Jula emoticon

I've got 3 weeks left including this week, then i go back for 12 weeks in June. Part of the problem is i haven't had a shift with my mentor yet for one reason or another. Se seems really good and is really commited to teaching students and on the few times she's seen me being used as a HCA she's butted in. I'm finally working with her on Thursday, but then she goes on holiday next week. I'm going to have a word with her when i'm on shift with her.

That really is scary.... you'll soon be a 3rd year emoticon

Re: Placement Update 1

Well, i've finished my first placement. Despite my whinging i did enjoy it overall. emoticon

I felt a bit funny leaving actually because i'm not going to know what happend to the patients i've been looking after.

My mentor's said she's really pleased with me and i'll make a really good staff nurse emoticon She's also said that when i go back she'll have me doing patient centred care plans and some of the management stuff emoticon

It's going to be strange being back at uni. I wonder how many people have dropped out.....

Re: Placement Update 1

It was really wierd going back to uni after my first placement and finding out that people had left....quite a shock really. It's not that easy to get a place and then they leave...thats gotta take some guts. Interestingly it was mainly adult and mental health students that left at that time. Wonder why?
It's brill that you have got such a good feedback, and that you finished up enjoying your time there. Not be long before you're back.

Got those skills exams coming up though eh? What 'seen' question have you got for Bio-psycho-social? Bet i can guess.........begins with an 'S'.
