What else can i do?

I really don't seem to be learning anything anymore on the ward i'm on. I spend all day every day working with the auxillaries while the nurse is elsewhere doing other things.

Now i don't mind "mucking in" and doing the basic nursing care.... but what are the nurses doing while i'm doing this? Surely i need to learn that too? When i ask if i can help they say "is everyone washed?" or "do the auxillaries need any help?" at which point, if the answer is no i feel obligated to go back with the auxillaries.

Am i just being inpatient wanting to learn more or am i being fobbed off? I don't think never working with my mentor is helping...

Oh well, another day tomorrow.

Do you have to do learning contracts? I usally make a note of what I want to achieve on the ward and then thrust it in my mentors face. Things like doing a drug round, managing a small bay etc and then once she knows that you want to do it she may giddy up her ideas and include you.
I find it very hard to approach a mentor and tell them that I am not happy so I do find that putting it down on paper and then showing them what you want to achieve in that placement will help.(hopefully)

Good luck xxx

No we don't do anything like that. It would be nice to see my mentor tho.... I have only done 1 shift with her in 9 weeks. Whenever i am due to work with her she changes her shifts at the last minute so i turn up for work expecting to work with her and find i'm with someone else.

Oh well, i'm going to scrutinise the off duty today and see if i have any shift rota'd with her in the near future and have a word with her. If not i'm going to ask the sister to change my mentor.

That isn't good only working with your mentor once in 9 weeks so I think you have a good case to ask about this hun. Do you have an associate mentor? I know our uni sayw we must work 50% of the time with our mentor although it doesn't always happen. May be you could ask about changes mentors as I don't think it is fair that you never work with her at all. I think maybe it's time to have a word with them hun xxx

Hiya Sam, what i do/did was to use the action plan sheets in our portfolio. That way, what you want to do is on paper and the mentor has to read it and follow up. I found this worked quite nicely emoticon

Are they in your portfolio or have they got rid of them? If so, the make your own heh heh !
