First Placement
I'm not into the 3rd week of my first placement and it's going ok. I am out with the DN's in community. My time is split between 2 mentors and 2 bases. At first I thought this might be a good thing but the patients I saw in my first 2 weeks I won't see again, so quite hard for assignments etc.
My new mentor only works part time so when she doesn't have me off out with some other part of the H&S care team, I'm at home!
I've done a few simple dressings, I've done BM's, drawn up and given insulin and taken out staples after a knee replacement. I've spent a couple days with the school nurse and another one to go, been with the practice nurse, been to a couple of talks on diabetes, one on cardiovascular system, also have other visits arranged for the next 2 weeks.
I am enjoying it but starting to get bored now, I just wish I was actually physically doing more and learning more but the opportunities are just not there. I have all but 3 of my competencies met and signed off so not worried about not passing the placement. It's just not turned out as well as I'd hoped.

Re: First Placement
Well here I am about to enter the final week of my first placement.
I've loved being with my 2nd mentor even although I was apprehensive about it. She's a real scream and we've had a lot of fun at the same time as me learning!
I did my first bandage the other day, something my first mentor wouldn't allow me to do incase I did it too tight???? I mean how am I supposed to learn not to get it too tight if I don't get to do it? Anyhow got it done and feel ok about it, obviously I need more practice but will feel a bit better about doing it next time. Starting to be able to recognise different levels of wounds/wound healing and some of the different dressings are sticking in my head!
Done a couple of B12 injections, bit of a scarey needle but I managed.
Currently seeing maggot therapy at the moment, saw them going on the other day and lucky for me I'll be there when she has her 2nd batch taken off next Thursday - can't wait.
I am enjoying it and I thought I'd love the slower pace of it but to be honest that kind of job I don't think is for me.
My 2 mentors are at opposite ends of the scale, while my 1st was pleasant and we got on and she taught me and I learned, my 2nd is more like me and we get on like a house on fire, I've enjoyed being with her (just found out she's my sons best friends godmother...ROFL).
In uni tomorrow for a reflection day and nibbles and drinks then 4 final days of placement. After xmas, exam and study leave I'm straight back out onto placement, no idea where it'll be or when we'll find out, looking fwd to a new challenge though.
