Second Placement

Well the news came in the post today.

A local (ish) 70 bedded hospital specialising in continuing care of the elderly. I'm not too sure what it involves as yet as it's too soon to give them a call. I'm thinking it'll be rehab and perhaps some palliative care. Lots of personal care, BM's, catheter care and obs no doubt, help with feeding perhaps and hopefully I'll get stuck in about the drug round. Looking forward to it.

Re: Second Placement

Ok first day down.

It's more nursing home style care. So mainly personal care. All patients are NFR and most are all care. I think I've only seen one person who can walk. Most can transfer with 2 and lots need help with feeding.

They do have some IV's and PEG feeds and cathetars so there may be a chance to get involved with those.

Staff all seem lovely, heading in for a late shift today!

Re: Second Placement

My placement finished a week ago and I loved it! Was so sad to leave, the people there really are a joy to work with.

The staffing levels are quite good and no one is ever rushed off their feet, they have something to do for most of the day but they never were harrassed.

I learned so much, more BM's and insulin injections, PEG feeding and inserting butterfly then setting up fluids and getting them to run at 3 1/2 drips per 15 seconds..lol... I even got the chance to catheterise a lady and had an indepth session on aseptic technique. I learned to assess the patients skin while washing and dressing, what to look out for and what was normal and what was not.

Next placement isn't until 21st May but I'm back at uni enjoying my coffee but stressing again at the work load!! emoticon
