4th Placement
Final placement of 1st yr. A 3 week placement on a medical cardio/gastro ward. It went well and I feel I learned loads in a short time. I feel I gained confidence in writing in the notes, something I know I need to learn but hate doing, it's that whole "it could come back and haunt you in 6 months" thing. But I learned that if I write everything that happened on the shift, I really can't go wrong. I've often been told before that there was no need to put this or no need to put that, but on this placement I was told, I put what I want and what I feel I need to put - feel slightly better after that.
As for clinical skills I inserted 3 female catheters and that takes my total to 4, I really feel that after another couple I would feel more than confident about doing them alone (obviously not as a student!). I did one or two drugs round every day and I know I'm becoming more confident with that, I remember at first the cardex giving me palpitations!
I had a much better report this time, my last one said I lacked confidence and appeared overwhelmed at times, but I didn't feel any of that on this placement and it shows how having a wonderful mentor increases your confidence.
