Final Placement 2nd yr

Got details of our next placement today. Another record since placement is not until August!!

It's a community placement with (I think) the District Nurses. Pretty much local health centre to me so very pleased about that. Mixed feelings about this placement as the last community placement was my very first placement ever, nearly 2 years ago! I was not as pro active back then and didn't really do much on placement, so I'm going to attempt to be my usual inquisitive self and get stuck in to as many things as possible. I'm pretty sure due to the area it won't all be little old ladies who have gardeners and cleaners like my last community placement..lol..

Re: Final Placement 2nd yr

Update!

It's with the Health Visitors, to say I'm disappointed is an understatement. While a generic job description reels off how they deal with people of all ages and play a big part in health promotion, I know in my area of the city that doesn't happy, it's babies only. Why oh why oh why is an adult branch nurse in her last placement of 2nd year going to the HV. There's another 2 girls in my class who are the same and we're all so disappointed in it. It's doubtful my uni will change it, that would be a miracle, but it's going to be such a waste of 6 weeks. Now I know, I'll probably learn loads and I'll probably even enjoy it, but I'm not going to learn much that will play a part in my future practice.

*sigh*

Re: Final Placement 2nd yr

although you say that it may not have a lot of use to you in the future but now that the role of the public health staff nurse has been rolled out across scotland it will play a part in many peoples future jobs.

you could say that going to eye ward or gynae theatres wont have much use if they are areas your not interested in.

child protection is important in every aspect of nursing so i would concentrate on that side of it if child development and imms arent your thing.... and having done it for nearly a year i must admit it doesnt motivate me too much but im sure there are some people who would enjoy this job as an NQ.

there is also a paper called review of nursing in the community (in Scotland) and that is for the implementation of the community health nurse who will be involved in school nursing, health visiting and district nursing more like a team leader and the community staff nurses are going to be taking on more of the roles of the HV as the community nurses on the DN and school nursing teams do already.

anyway i hope its not to gruelling for you

Re: Final Placement 2nd yr

Sorry Lulu didn't see this till now! I did mean to contact you since I knew this was the kind of job you did, but never got round to it.

I can't say it's been one of the best placements ever, I haven't learned any clinical "skills" BUT I've learned loads about society. Loads of stuff that I think I've been "protected" from! Poverty, inequalities, asylum seekers, refugees. I've learned about loads of other services that are available in the area to help support the clients/patients.

I did learn quite a bit about childhood immunisations although sitting watching them week after week was kinda tedious, I started betting with myself to see which one would cry!!

I also learned that everything is never how it seems!!

So yes, not the best placement but a worthwhile one never the less!
