Question??

Ok. While being a student, do you think it would be better for someone to a) rent a flat and rely on public transport to get you to and from placements or b) stay at home with parents but buy a car instead.
I had always assumed that I would rent a flat, as I dont really get on very well living with my parents, but it was suggested today by them that I might want to consider the car option instead. I can see how both optins could work, but wonder what the general opinion might be... freedom by having my own flat, or freedom by having a car..... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: Question??

Def having a car! In my first year I relied on public transport and it was horrendous esp for those 7am starts and some places are unsympathetic.
Its up to you doll but I would def go with a car! xx

Re: Question??

It's a toughie but I reckon the factors you need to take account are where your placements are compared to where you could/ do live and what the public transport is like, whether you have enough space and peace and quiet at home/ or in potential rented flat (with other people?) and what your heart is really telling you. Then do some cold hearted maths- how much is the flat in terms of rent but also bills, etc and how much is the car- buying it initially, insurance, road fund tax, etc.

People tell me to get rid of my car because I can't afford it really (insurance is crazy in London) but otherwise I couldn't get to uni and placements so I have to have it!

Good luck with your decision emoticon

Re: Question??

you get the same bursary no matter whether you live on your own or with your folks... i think you would definately be much better off living at home.... you can always move out later if you think you will manage or once you paid for your car emoticon

home cooked dinners and getting your washing done might also be added benefits of living at home which is really handy if your on placment and studying a lot. emoticon

Re: Question??

I'm still trying to figure out where my placements could be... I seem to remember being told that it depends on my postcode. If so then I will cover Argyle and Clyde instead of Greater Glasgow if I stay at home and that is huge!! I think it even covers Oban etc??? (I could be wrong about that)
Anyway, Im going to look at cars on Saturday to get some numbers for costs etc... At least there is no hurray for me to make the decision as home is only a 20 minute train journey away from uni!!
Will let you know what I decide to do...

Re: Question??

Hey hun, I was told at Caley that it depended on my postcode aswell but in reality that doesnt always happen, I think its a safe bet that most of your hospitals will be in The Greater Glasgow Area which is ok for transport its when you are on community in far flung places that it can be a bit of a pain xx
