My thoughts

So the last two weeks have been very interesting! Did my induction for the bank, and my first week of shifts in the theatre. I loved woking in theatre, but it really makes me think about my course...

I applied for the BANS course, not really knowing anything about diploma course (Knew nurses were uni trained, therefore needed degree, therefore check UCAS!!) To begin with I was proud and excited to be on BANS course, now I'm not so sure... It really makes no difference in the long run, but the differences so far to me are quite big. I am over half way through first year and have only had 4 weeks of proper placement. (I dont count the 4 weeks mental health as it was a university placement which was a complete joke) So 4 weeks with a health visitor and thats it. I know that I have 13 weeks to come over the summer (4 weeks community, 8 weeks care of elderly) but I find it very worrying that chances are I will be in 2nd year before I get any hospital placements. Speaking to Amanda and Sue and comparing what they have done to my course leaves me feeling very behind.
Now I have got on the bank I am planning on gaining as much experience as possible in as many areas of the hospitals as possible. But it sort of feels like I am organising my own education. Not that that is a bad thing, but hopefully you get what I mean!
I just think that every student nurse should get into the hospitals in their first year so that they know what they are really letting themself in for. I know that care of elderly will do this too, but to me, having never worked in the care sector before, getting into hospitals was very important to me.

Sorry I am really waffling here, and I bet it doesnt make sense, but this helps me!

To sum this up, I'm enjoying uni, but Im concerned about placement allocation on the BANS puts us at a disadvantage. Feel miles behind the diploma students in clinical skills. Hope that things will even out in time, but that is just my impression so far!!

Re: My thoughts

I've never understood why they need 2 seperate programs anyway, does it not make sense to do the 3 yr diploma/degree combined course and then do a 4th yr honours.....obviously it doesn't make sense or they would do it. I don't understand why the courses differ so much anyway.

Pauline as you say I'm sure it will even out throughout the course, hang in there.
