to be honest its more than just a couple of grand difference between an hca and a odp... and hca is on roughly 14-17k and an odp is on approx 20 to 25k.

added to that you get to do the job you really want and its only for 2 years of struggling butyou do get something you want atthe end of it.

lots of people do till do part time work during their course which might help a wee bit and depending on what your joint income is you can maybe get the childcare element of wtc.

What about secondment if you did go and become a HCA, i was offered secondment to do my training some years ago but choose to become a Assistant Practitioner instead and now doing my training which has only been a 2 year course.
There are means and ways around it if you do want to go further later on.
