Placement 1

Well i found out where my first placement is, its on the Acute Stroke Unit really excited and so looking forward to starting

I am also with a friend on this unit so we went and introduce ourselves to the ward together and they were lovely I met my mentor and had a little chat she was really nice she has a kind face as well if you know what i mean She does long days and so will i be, she did ask if i was ok with that and i said i wasn't sure as i hadn't worked for 14 years what a stupid thing to say, i didn't mean it as it came out, what i mean't was i had been a say at home mum for 14 years and am unsure if i am physically fit enough for a 121/2hour shift. But what i am hoping is i will lose loads of weight because of all exercise :mrgreen

Anyway i am sooooo excited and can't wait got my trust induction on monday and 1st shift on thursday

Re: Placement 1

Well day 1 went well, left home at 5:55, as i was unsure how busy the M6 would be at that time in the morning, arrived at 6:45 so was very pleased, sat in the car until 7:10 then went on to the ward. My mentor told me to concentrate on what diets and how the patients were moved during handover.

After handover my mentor showed me around the ward and where things are kept etc, she said that this week i need to orientate myself with the ward and then next week she expects more of me.

I helped a fellow student with bed bathing, taking patients to the toilet, changing pads giving out meals, doing the obs etc. My feet were killing me but the time did flyby. At about 5:30 i had my initial interview with my mentor and i now know exactly what i need to do for my first three pc's which is great. In the end all the student nurses were allowed to leave at 7pm so we could go and do some reflective practice. The hardest part of the day was driving home i was so tired, but got in had a bath then caught up with the kids and hubby, then watched i,m a celebrity they remembered to video it for me.

Had a pedicure this morning my feet loved it, off to get ready for day 2 tommorow now bye for now

p.s found out my day off falls on my youngests nativity day soooo pleased was dreading missing it she was jumping up and down with excitement when i told her.

Re: Placement 1

Well placement is going okish emoticon my mentor scares me to death and i am very anxious and emotional at the moment as well as really tired. I ended up in tears the other day and got told to get off the ward and to compose myself as it was very unprofessional emoticonalso started experiencing palpatations again not very nice.

I feel i have learned loads especially off the HCAs, i can now help with all basic hygiene needs of a patient and have given my first injection

Nursing is defo what i want to do i havn't been put off, its just a shame my mentor gets me in such a state as i would perform far better for her if i could relax, only 5 weeks left emoticon

Re: Placement 1

I hope the rest of your placement isn't too bad. You seem to be doing very long days.

Re: Placement 1

Well i survived my first placement, and passed it
I have learned so much, i started without any care experience at all so the learning curve has been very steep, a was on a acute stroke unit and worked every shift with my mentor except the week she was on annual leave, she was okish but was the person on the ward that no one liked or got on with so everyone felt sorry for me having her as a mentor. I learned more from the other staff nurses and sisters on the ward, for instance she did not let me watch her pass NG tubes as she said it was a traumatic enough experience for the patient without me staring at them it was the same for any other learning opportunity that i could have had too. But the week she was off was brilliant not only did i relax i watched NG tubes being passed, helped set up feeds did every drugs round possible and really settled in, everyone else was so supportive it was brilliant.

Well i have a weeks holiday now, so have relaxed today, planning to start on a essay tomorrow and have Thursday and Friday off. It was so nice to see the kids before they left for school this morning and to be here when they got home its funny the simple things in life you miss
