Re: My exciting life ha ha

Following on from that I did a late last night as well on "the" ward. The infamous sister was not in and it was a really pleasant shift. A patient had a birthday so I sang to her and she cried. I think that may have been my bloody awful singing. Watched a bit of live 8 on a patients tv and well and truly sobbed to Robbie Williams Angels song. It was my fave patients special song who passed away a couple of weeks ago and just really got to me. It was stange as I was watching it on the tv by the bed in which he was and he called me his angel before he died. Sob. I had to go to the sluice and have a good smell to bring me back to earth again hee hee. They told me they were short for the following morning and could I please please please work. It was my first day off with the family in so so so long but being good I said ok then if you give me my Friday early off I will come in 2mrw from 7 - 12. Oh no she said you will still owe 3 hours which you will have to do on Friday!!It takes me an hour each way to work so as I was doing them a favour I told them very politely to stuff it up their bum and if they were not willing to give a little in return for me cancelling my family day then I would just stick with my Friday thank you very much. Phew that hurt my fingers typing that!! Am off to prepare my presentation for uni and my meeting with personal tutor 2mrw. Joy oh joy alive.
Keep smiling everyone.
xxxxx

Re: My exciting life ha ha

Hiya had a chat with my tutor today, she was about as much use as achocolate teapot. What she basically said was to bury my head in the sand and ignore it as my placement is nearly over. Disgusted really. Told her about the late shifts the double shifts with no notice but she didn't suggest anything at all just for me to improve my time management!! ARgh.xx

Re: My exciting life ha ha

that is ridiculous!! emoticon

is there a link tutor or education co-ordinator for the ward cos i would maybe trying getting touch with her.

if not contact your union, Unison and the rcn would def be on your side im sure.

would find out the procedure for going over your tutors head too... she is expecting you to work in highly dangerous situation of working 20 hour shifts... nobody would be able to do that safely... that is putting you and the patiets at risk!!!

and even if you only have a few weeks left does this mean your tutor is promoting these shifts for future students emoticon

good luck getting it resolved

Re: My exciting life ha ha

There was a man from the uni who is meant to come in every week to see how we are. I have been here 10 weeks and seen himonce and I mentioned it to him last time amongst other things and he was the same. Because we have so many students and not enough wards they hate to loose a ward even when it is so badly run. We have just recieved our next placements for year two and one student is at JCB filling in health questionnaires for employees can you believe that??!!My tutor did say that I am able to refuse these long shifts but did not offer to back me up although we did document it on a form so I have that to help. I am on a late 2mrw and if my shifts are not available yet I am going to stand up for myself and put my own in!!
Watch me come on 2mrw night all upset hee hee.

I do agree it is very dangerous to conduct a ward like this and although I am at the end of the 1st year I do not consider myself competant to be left alone on a ward (this happens).

I shall stand my ground 2mrw and tell them I will do my normal shift, no extras added on and that I wish to have adeqaute supervision when necessary.

Thanks hun you are a star. Feels good to get it out.

Hiya!!!
Well I was on a late today and shifts had still not been done for next week so I went and put my own down on the off duty. Hee hee. I was too scared to tell anyone I had done it so will have to say something 2mrw and say that I have done it but was somad that they had not been done again. Have chosen dates that fit in with my childcare so fingers crossed it all works out. No tears!!---yet!!!

well i would just stand by your guns and say that it might be ok for them but its unacceptable for you to wait til the last minute for the shifts... and that its either those shifts or you wont be in next week as you dont have child care.

still think it might be worth contacting your union and seeing what their veiw point is too.

good luck for tomorrow emoticon

Re: My exciting life ha ha

I will do. Spoke to a EN tonight as well as uni have now said with regards to any made up time we do that we can not do less than 4 hours even if we have to add it onto a normal shift we have to do an extra of 4 hours minimum if we have time to make up which I do. I was hoping to do a 7-3 shift then add an hour extra on as my made up time but uni saying no!!Do you know if there is a max limit of hours we can work a week? You seem to be always up as late as I do!! Mad isn't it.

Re: My exciting life ha ha

New update on my shifts!!It makes crazy reading. Next week I have put my own shifts down as again there was no off duty for next week and I had to book child care. I also go away on holiday next Friday morning so am working the weekend to ensure my last day is Thursday. Yesterday my sister mentioned to me that she was doing two nights next week and I could do them as well. I said unfortunately I had had to book my childcare and could not get cover for nights at this short notice as my husband works shifts too. I also mentioned I was flying away on Friday and she said that I could work the Thursday night and go straight to the airport on Friday morning. Everyone has told me to stick up for myself and stand firm and say no but its really getting me down as I really hate any sort of conflict and I am finding myself trying to keep out of her way in case she asks me again. Is there anything i can say to her that anyone can think of? I only have next week left but I want to go back to do some made up time so I don't want to leave on a bad note but I am sure that trying to make me work nights with little notice is not good. Someone said tocontact the RCN or uni but I want to try and deal with this myself so as to stay on good terms with the sister.
I actually have a day off today yey!!! Anyhelp would be much appreaciated. xx

Re: My exciting life ha ha

Bemboni, just remember you're there as supernumeri if they are short on day's you can't or won't work that is not your problem!!!! emoticon Justify your action's to yourself ( you are training to improve family life...you want to learn...) and you are not there to make things easier for other members of staff or win popularity competitions for who can save the struggling ward single handed. I know this might be a bit blunt or hard but i have learnt that you have to look after number one and that by doing all these extra/unreasonable shifts you are not helping yourself to stay the pace and will ultimately burn yourself out. This is because the nature of most work ethos is to exploit those that are willing to go the extra mile without suporting them when they need suport (such as time of for burn out or family problems) Good luck and get tough!!!
