Placement over
WELL thats another placement over. The ward was mad today actually it has been all week. We had some very sick patients admmitted to the ward. All of which were on niv (non-invasive ventilation) seven patients, all on hrly obs plus the other 22 patients which vary from independent to imobile.
I was working in the back of the ward today, this is where the side rooms all are plus a 4 bedded bay. The majority of these patients are self caring and have Cystic Fibrosis or Bronchiectisis. I got stuck in today whilst the nurse allocated to the area did the medicine round. Observations, breakfasts, beds and washes. the nurse went on her break i was then left to get on with my tasks for the day. I then went to break. When i got back, the nurse informed me that she would have to work around the front of the ward due to 2 near arrests on the ward. The crash trolley was lined up between two bays. The nurse asked me to keep my eye on the back bay and any problems to summon help from the front of the ward.
I finished the bedmaking, did all the next lot of obs. Took messages, sorted out an occluded drip pump, wrote up some notes for handover at 1pm.
chatted to the patients. These are the days i love when i feel like a nurse, getting on with the job instead of standing around like a spare part. I was commended by the nursing staff as well as the sister, said my goodbyes to all(after getting the all important portfolio marked off)staff and patients, without any tears and left for home.
Well back to uni next week and a week to go before exams. Looking forward to the next phase the ologies. Next placement straight after crimbo surgical here i come.
