The Open University Pre-Registration Nursing Course
A DIARY OF AN (OU) NURSING STUDENT
INTRODUCTION
The aim of this thread is pass on the information on what it is like to be an (OU) Nursing Student from start of course to finish.
I shall do this in the form of a diary.
HISTORY
The pre-registration nursing programme leads to the award of an Open University Diploma of Higher Education (Nursing) and the professional qualification of Registered Nurses (Parts 12 or 13: NMC Part 1 on the new register from April 2004).
Presented in partnership with and supported by Workforce Development Confederations, Trusts and independent health care providers, the programme is initially aimed at experienced health workers who meet the professional body’s minimum requirements for entry to nurse training. The programme enables you to study and qualify while remaining in work and maintaining your family and social commitments. Authors Note: Whilst studying, you are paid by your employer. Part of your salary is it whatever grade you normally are and the student hours is paid at Agenda for Change Annexe U rates).
The programme involves a structured educational framework that uses the workplace as the site for student learning. It is therefore only open to you if your employer is/becomes involved in this Open University partnership.
The full programme consists of 120 credit points at Common Foundation Programme level (undergraduate Level 1) and 120 points at branch level (undergraduate Level 2). The course is offered as either Adult Nursing or Mental Health Nursing.
The full programme is 4,600 hours of study, of which theory is 2,300 hours and practice is 2,300 hours. The theoritical and practical units have the same duration as with 'normal' University Pre-registration Nursing Courses.
All books and course materials, audio tapes, video tapes and a laptop computer are provided by The Open University. There is only one or two books that are not supplied.
Also provided is an OU on-line support website with your own personal page whereby any course information and updates as well as Assignment and Exam results are recorded.
