Events leading up to starting the course
EVENTS LEADING UP TO STARTING THE COURSE
The following is a list of dates and events up to this point in time.
September 2003 - Poster advertising OU course posted on Ward Notice Board.
October 2003 - Deadline for applications.
November 2003 - Informal Interview for OU application. Interviewed by an OU Regional Tutor, NHS Trust Deputy Director of Nursing and the NHS Trust's Student Facilitator.
UNSUCCESSFUL
September 2004 - Poster advertising OU course posted on Ward Notice Board.
October 2004 - Deadline for applications.
November 2004 - Informal Interview for OU application. Interviewed by the same OU Regional Tutor, NHS Trust Deputy Director of Nursing and by one of the NHS Trust's Clinical Tutors.
SUCCESSFUL
14/02/05 - Found out today, that i should have started the course the previous week on 09/02/05 in Portsmouth ....... typical! Next tutorial 16/02/05.
16/02/05 - Attended first tutorial. These are only 2.5 hour sessions. There are only 3 of us out of the 18 in the class from the Isle of Wight on the Adult Nursing course (because there are only 3 of us on the Adult Nursing Course, we had to join the Portsmouth based cohort. There were enough Mental Health Nursing students to run a cohort on the Island). The Course Tutor seems nice.
19/02/05 - OU internet/web passwords, etc arrived through the post. I can now get on-line to my personal OU account.
21/02/05 - OU tutorial pack arrived through the post. It's just like Christmas. Loads of stuff - books, audio tapes, CD-ROM, videos, etc ......... and even a snazzy bag to carry it all around in! Very comprehensive, wish I had this whilst studying for the NVQ's. I now feel that i have started .......... its been a long haul. I can now get my teeth into the first assignment. It is supposed to be handed in by 02/03/05. It is about 'Informal Carers' and should be between 500 and 800 words.
FOOTNOTE
It has taken me three years to get to this position. First, I got a contract within the NHS. Second, I completed the NVQ 2 in Care in 2003. Lastly, I completed the NVQ 3 in Care last November, 2004. As you can see, i applied for the course (the first on the Island) last year, but was unsuccessful (failed the entry criteria by 1 point).
Thanks goes to both of the Ward Sisters that I have worked with and am currently working with for their support over the last three years, without whom, I probably would not have made it this far
