aggressive patient
ive been on an early shift today and one of the patient who have a history of abuse towards staff decided to have a right go at me, I have dealt with many patient like this before but i was still quite taking aback,
He is normally always very polite and friendly with me, although ive seen him get abusive to other staff i had never been on the recieving end,
today i asked him to leave a patient who was feeling unwell and was becoming agitated, the patient who i will call mr s, then turned quickly and grabbed my arm then got right up close to my face and shouted in a threatning way, swearing and calling me awfull things, bearing in mind this patient is about 6ft and well built i did feel quite vunerable, i asked him in a calm voice to leave go of my arm and not to speak to me in that way as i dont speak to him this way i dont expect it from him, he then grabbed the bedside table and pushed it across the bay, with the water jug crashing to the floor,
I really believed that i had a good relationship with the patient and that i would probably be the one who he would most listen to. but i realise how wrong you can be, this will make me more aware in future and ill be alot more prepared for rapid behavioural changes.
