Re: Deckplan Alliance IRC-Chat

Hello everyone,

a lot of users seem to be a bit shy about using a full irc-client, and go for the cgi webinterface instead.
So I tought it would be a good idea to describe the basic configuration of the most common windows IRC-Clients and where to get them.

I'll start of with mIRC. I guess it's the most used IRC-Client for windows-systems. mIRC is shareware, and runs without hinderance for 30 days. After 30 days you'll get a 30 second delay before it starts up, but besides that it's still fully functional. You can download it from the offical
mIRC-Website

Now to the basic instructions. After you downloaded mIRC and installed it, mIRC will show you a options dialog when you start it up. First you can enter some infos like name, e-mail, nickname etc.
Afterwards select "Servers"

Image

Since we use a small, private IRC-Server we have to add it to the list of servers, so just hit the "Add" button, wich will open a new dialog.

Image

Enter the values I already provided in the screenshot.
A short discription of the values:
"Description": put in there what ever you want, it's just there for you
"IRC Server" + "Port": the IRC-Server we connect to and the port it uses. Enter the shown values.
"Password": if you registered your nickname with NickServ you can enter your NickServ Password there, so that you don't have to do it manually everytime you login.
After you entered the values, hit the "Add"-Button and "Connect to Server" afterwards.

mIRC will connect to the IRC-Server now, and a new window pops open, called "mIRC Favorites"

Image

Make sure "Enable join on connect" is checked, and if you don't wan't your favorites to open up everytime you connect, deactivate "Pop up favorites on connect"

Since we are lazy bastards, we don't want to join the Design Alliance Chatroom manually evertime we login. So hit "Add" and add #SWDA to your favorites (#deckplanalliance as it is shown in the screenshots, was the old name)

Image

Just enter the channelname, check "join on connect" and hit ok.
#SWDA is now in your favorites, and next time you login to the server, mIRC will automatically join the chatroom. For the first time you have to join manually, but mIRC should already be on the just created entry, so just click "Join" and there you are!

Re: Deckplan Alliance IRC-Chat

The next client I'd like to describe is X-Chat 2.
X-Chat 2 is the propably the most used, graphical opensource IRC-client.
There are versions of X-Chat 2 wich run under Linux, Windows or OS X, and as usual for opensource software it's absolutly free.
You can get a windows-version of it from here: X-Chat 2 for Windows

Configuring X-Chat 2 is also pretty easy. When you start it up the first time, it will show you a window titled "XChat: Server List"

Image

Enter your Nick name, User name and Real name first (x-chat wont connect without those values). When you have done that, hit the "Add"-button to add a new network. This will generate an entry called "New Network". Give it a new name and hit "Edit" afterwards, wich will open a new window again.

Image

The server entry will actually be "newserver/6667" when the window opens. Just edit it to irc.hrun.net as shown. Check "Auto connect to this network at startup" and enter the Design Alliance channel, wich is #SWDA (#DeckplanAlliance was the old name).
If you have a NickServ protected nickname, enter your password in the Nickserv Password field.
With that you should be set and can hit the "Close"-button.

If not already the case, highlight your just created Network, hit connect and thats it already. With the next start of X-Chat it will directly connect to the server and join the room all by itself.

Announcement!!!

Due to the changed name of the Forum, the Star Wars Deckplan Alliance irc-chat is no longer in the chatroom #deckplanalliance. The new room is #SWDA, which is short for Star Wars Design Alliance.

Please change your chatclient settings to the new address.

Is anybody else having trouble connecting to the IRC server? I was on a few minutes ago and got disconnected, and cannot reconnect.

Yes, it is currently down. Happens once or twice a year and it never took longer than a few hours. No big deal. emoticon
