Monitor Calibration

Greetings,

It has been made clear that many people do not have the proper calibration of their monitors.

Mike Verta, a prominent and extremely talented cg artist has been kind enough to share these basic tools to calibrate people's monitors to view colours and images in the best possible light as they were meant to be seen.
I strongly recommend that you use these tools to set your monitor settings, as everyone sets their monitors differently.

Brightness / Gamma Correction

you should only be able to see the 2 rightmost squares in both images.
If you can see 3 squares on the top, your monitor is too bright.
If you can see 3 squares on the bottom, your monitor is too dark.

Temperature Setting

This image is used to determine grey scale scale settings.
There are 3 grey stripes in this image.
The centre stripe is solid grey.
The left stripe is 5% blue.
The right stripe is 5% red.

It is strongly recommended that you reset your monitor to these settings for the best possible viewing experience in general, not just the art on our site, but for games and movies as well.

Hey this is handy !!

My monitor is, apparently, well calibrated !! I use a Sony 17" lcd SDM-HS74P x-black with my Mac Mini. Works like a charm !

As mac user you are pretty lucky, because OS X has very good integrated calibration software.

I use a 15" Sony Trinitron screen for color correction, since my main screen is an LCD and they are not colorfast enough. Even perfectly calibrated, an LCD makes things visible that can not be seen on a normally calibrated TV screen or CRT screen and there are often some slight changes in color.

Even if it is calibrated well, never trust a flatscreen!

But I don't suppose you are working with TV material, so this doesn't probably hurt you much.
