Re: TIE series
quote: Nice thought but the Imperials refer to them as TIE fighters.
I'll conceed to that since I'm not aware of all references to the fighter.
On another thread I've posted screen caps of the interior, and is appears that the interior space of the ball is mostly ****pit. The fighter's miniturization of power and thrust system is what sets it apart from all other piloted craft. I can see how technicians and pilots refered to it by its unique propulsion, and it would be these people that joined the rebellion and carried forth the TIE nomenclature to the Alliance. I still think there would be a production designation regardless of the fact that authors have failed to speculate that possibilty.
If the events in SW were actually historical and arrived to us by third parties who had heard these tales and were retelling them, the storytellers would not be privy to all the information about those events and would have some information wrong or omitted. This would be like an American novelist writting a story about a Soviet fighter pilot and using only the aircraft designations that the author was only aware of.
And to note, I've just done a Google search looking for any information as to the russian names for their aircraft. I was unable to find anything other than the NATO codenames. It's a possibilty that they aren't named beyond the design bureau designation.
The X-wing is an Incom T-65 and doesn't have an official name as designated by Incom, to my knowledge. However the Incom/Subpro Z-95 has an official name, "Headhunter".
It's reasonable to conclude that a industrial, bureaucratic, superpower like the Impire would have a designation system other than using a popularized common name.

Re: TIE series
The T stands for Twin. The Scimitar bomber had one, so it was not called a TIE.
Vader's was called a TIE Advanced, it had four, or Twin-Twins. Two sets of the same engine set up.
The TIE Defender and Tie Bomber had two.
The Sentry Tank was not officially called a TIE Crawler, since it had no ion engines, this was a nickname for it's similarity to the TIE Fighter.
Honestly, I have read your posts twice over now... why are we trying to make the T in TIE mean something other than literally "twin"? It makes no sense.

I need a part number for a what ?
The problem is West End Games and Wizards of the Coast both made games very biased towards the Rebellion, the Alliance, and the Jedi.
WEG AND WOTC blatantly abandoned the Empire’s more intricate details, because they figured an X-wing pilot would never know nor care about what a TIE/gt was really called by the men who flew, worked on, and loved them as their own.
This liberal mind set is also the propagator of the idea everyone in the Empire was evil, and everyone in the rebellion was good. It was a galactic civil war with beings of honor and evil on both sides.
I myself side with the old Empire and the likes of a certain Grand Admiral, so I will aid in this endeavor to find, or invent the lost names of TIE fighters for those who enjoy playing imperial sympathizers, and practitioners of the dark side.
Also many of the older TIE models became military surplus (TIE/gt was replaced by the TIE Bomber) for planetary defense armies, and less than legitimate military forces. These surplus fighters need names to allow for proper order of replacement parts and such. Novoil Cluster Stargoods produces remanufactured TIEs, and they need model numbers for stock purposes as well.

Re: TIE series
West End Games Star Wars Role-Playing Game 2nd Edition did favor the rebellion and Jedi side, but that was more meeting the demand of the market. It's what a lot of people want to play.
But there was also plenty of detailing on the Imperial, Sith, Mandalorian, Hutt, and various other sides. The big kick start to make the 2nd edition and produce more material for everything was the Thrawn Trilogy. Thrawn did much for bringing back the Star Wars universe.
But the TIE, even in the TIE Fighter series of games focusing on the Empire and TIE Pilots, was a Twin Ion Engine Fighter.
It was a wonderful series of crafts with a sound concept. I would have run things more like Thrawn and equipped all TIEs with shields and missiles myself too. Thrawn knew what he was doing.

Re: TIE series
quote: Because that's what we do.
That's not enough of an answer. Allow me to explain further.
George Lucas made Star Wars. I went to the store and bought it. I took it home and ripped the cardboard back open and pulled the Star Wars out of its transparent plastic cover. Then I proceeded to play with my Star Wars. That's what I'm doing. That's what we all are doing, playing with our Stars Wars'. Sometimes I create new designs, sometimes I ponder how things work. That's the way I play with it.
Some guys took their new Star Wars home and left it in the box. Sure it looks pretty in its pristine pose, and its collectors' value is rising, but I wanted to play with mine and get some good use out of it and raise the sentimental value.
People play with their Star Wars in different ways. For those of you that have left yours in the box, please afford us our valued playtime. Don't tell me how to play with it, or that I'm playing with it wrong. I can play with it the way I want and share it with others. That's what we are doing here. Sharing our Star Wars'.
Now, with that said:
Any good science fiction universe is not just going to abide with adhering to--or often as the case is, bending--the rules of physics and technology, but also abide by the rules governing sociology, cultural development, economics, and language and etymology. If we are to be realistic and apply these rules to the Star Wars Universe, expanded or not, then we must conclude that in a real organizationas complex as the Imperial Navy, that the term TIE cannot be used as a production or military designation solely on the fact that it has only TWO freaking engines. The following are absurd direct analogies: Jet/ln, Jet/gt, Jet/fc, Jet Intercepter, Jet/D, Jet Defender, Jet crawler, Jet Scimitar.
Maybe we can say the F-22A is the new Jet/ln. Maybe Al Qaida might refer to it as the Jet/ln, but the freaking Air Force doesn't.
I do not excuse the fact that something as obvious as a production/military designation for the common colloquial term TIE was not invented by LFL, Lucas Arts, WEG, or the numerous authors. I do not excuse the fact that the acronym TIE is a poor choice in that it is only a descriptor of engine number. I do not excuse the fact that the term TIE is a carry-over from the "Star Wars" production crew for its resemblence to a "bow tie". I do not excuse the fact that TIE became the official nomenclature. That was lazy and lacking imagination.
So when I play with my Star Wars, TWIN is going to stand for something other than two. It's going to stand for something that can make the most sense with what I have to play with. You don't have to play with your Star Wars the same way, but anyone who wants to, surely can.

Re: TIE series
TIE?....Twin Ion Engine?
Ion?
Ion Cannon?
Sounds like these Ions get everywhere
I have no opinion on the TIE fighter designations or official names, all I know is that they are manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems, they look cheap to make and easy to blow up, but they have strength in numbers, I would say more about the attitude of the Imperial Armed Forces putting cost effectiveness before the lives of the men and women that flew these unshielded death traps before the invention of the TIE Advanced or the TIE Defender.
Lucas, just to stick my oar in reference your comment about Imperial Academies. I belive Pilots were first trained in private academies to learn basic piloting, then all graduation records were sent to the Imperial Naval Academy on Caridia. Those in the top 10 percent of their classes were then given 12 months to apply for Imperial Piloting Training at the Imp Academy, or they were drafted. (I remember watching the deleted scene from ANH where Biggs tells Luke he is joining the Rebellion, he said he didn't want to wait around for the Imperial Draft. So I'm assuming that the Imp Navy were drafting young pilots to serve as TIE pilots, it would make sense to do so after so many of them get killed under Rebel Guns) Others with Piloting Experience can apply to join the Imperial Navy as a pilot (eg: Han Solo worked as a Spice runner to gain piloting experience before signing up for Imperial Service) if they wish, but Academy trained pilots were desired more.

Re: TIE series
to Paul
can I have an AMEN?!! too damned right.
Jace, alright..but all that info about naming and possible reference is not canon.
In our world, the earth is divided into hundreds of countries. and those countries have their own military and in each case, the requirements for acceptance in those academies are different ultimately but most are similar, fitness and aptitude are always at the forefront.
The difference is that in the Star Wars that we know and love from the Original Trilogy, we know that the GALACTIC EMPIRE is the ONLY major military force that you can join without getting killed for being a traitor.
Therefore when Biggs tells Luke that he is joining the academy, he is joining the IMPERIAL Flight academy and later defects to the Rebellion for some reason that is never stated. He wants to do this voluntarily because he wants to be a pilot, not because he wants to kill rebels.
regards,
Lucas

Re: TIE series
Cargile, I take all of what you said to heart. I have since long before you said it.
All except the part about TIE being a dumb name.
This is all of our Star Wars, and we can indeed enjoy it in any way that is enjoyable.
The explaination you gave of "That is what we do" was fully understood when you gave it. It is almost instinct to me to know the huge rant that has been given.
But back to the subject, I still disagree with changing the meaning fo the letter T.
