Jet/Ion engines

Image

Jet engine technology in Star Wars can completely do away with compressor blades by using force fields to do that function. This means that a jet engine can be designed to operate like a turbojet or a ram-/scramjet. It also means that jet engines don't have to be round.

This particular engine uses turbines to spin a tube shaft connected to a generator to provide power for the engine systems. Not all jet engines may require them. The turbine tube-shaft allows for an ion engine to be installed to operate independantly, or to augment the jet thrust. This engine can work in an atmoshere and in space.

The diffuser cone is shown in the full forward position for supersonic speeds. It will retract almost to the generator. I made a mistake and haven't cut notches in this part to facilitate the generator control and hardpoint connector foils.
A lot of the components have been omitted for clarity.

outstanding work Paul, I always love it when you make stuff like this.

It looks a lot like a Y-Wing engine...or at least a modified one....or maybe a naboonian (nubian?) engine.

It's nothing specific.

Think landspeeder as well.

Probably better used on land and airspeeders were there is something for the intake to take in compress and then combust.

Re: Jet/Ion engines

just one technical question here...
just how are forcefileds going to replace the compressor blades?
sure the magnetic field projectors could guide the airflow in but just what is going to cause the air pressure to compress?
you need to force the air in (compress it) somehow and I don't see how any type of force field is going to do that, just ducting the air isn't going to compress it by any means.

Sorry about the question, my wife and I were trying to figure out where you were going with that and just couldn't see it (probably over thinking it .. LOL)
we were kind of thinking specialy configured repulsors could do the job, but man all that extra energy requirement just to replace simple compressor blades, would it realy be worth the effort?

The ion engine could produce enough forward thrust that airspeed alone would compress the airflow (a scramjet) but this means the craft is already going supersonic and it would just help the craft go hypersonic. (I don't think have ever seen a hypersonic atmospheric craft in starwars).

Re: Jet/Ion engines

If I were doing a hard science fiction jet or hybrid engine, I wouldn't use force fields. I completely understand using the simplest, energy and financially economic means possible. A set of physical blades fits that bill.

And how do a bunch of spinning blades compress air anyhow? emoticon I mean, what's the deal there?
