Engine Size
As i am sitting here trying to create a ship, i started wondering exactly how much room is needed for engines?
Is there some kind of equation that is related to ships length that would determine how much of the ship should be devoted to engines, and their support systems? Or would it more be based off of the ships mass and carying capacity?

Re: Engine Size
engines should (in my opinion) be sized primarily on what looks 'cool' and appropriate. in general, i'd say that the engine 'block cylinder' should scale up relative to the ships overall size. But in addition i'd say that milatary ships have small but effective drives, stock civilian ships have large drives.
It really depends on what works with the ship
As far as the engine support area, that depends on the consumables time mostly.

Re: Engine Size
I have been doing some quick math on my Light Carrier and came up with the following numbers:
Ship mass: 1090 Metric Tons
Additional weight:
Hanger Craft: ~300mt
Spare parts: 1430mt (for starfighters and the carrier)
Food: 90mt
Crew: ~300 (including ships marine detachment) 30 mt
The list goes on but i dont want to bore you. Anyways, it seems as if the ship will most always have 2500mt (with a max of 5000mt of cargo) of stuff being cared with it at all times, making the overall weight of the craft ~3000mt.
Would you say devoting 16m x 10m X 60m to engines and reactors to be to much space or to little space, for the above mentioned stats?

I contradict that! It's the other way around!
Military technology is normaly not State of the art but tech that has proven to be reliable. Therefore the military tech is bigger and older.

Re: Engine Size
Some simple "facts":
Size of thruster diameter: Affects acceleration.
Length of thrusters: Affects economy.
That means that if a thruster is long compared to its diameter, it will most likely burn its fuel more efficiently, up to a point where it starts working the other way around.
Civilian technology tends to go for rentability and economy. Military technology goes for reliability and power.

rentability?

Re: Engine Size
Sorry, that was Dinglish. I meant 'profitability'.

ah, okay, that makes a bit more sense.
